Hello...I've been a lurker for a while and decided it's time to introduce myself. :D

I am a 41 year old mother of two daughters (18 and 22 yrs. old) and am planning to move to NZ in the early fall of 2007. My OH and I submitted our EOI last month and were selected. We are now waiting on the ITA to arrive, but unlike others we have read about, we are actually OK with it being a little slow as I need to complete my registration with the NZ Teachers' Council in the meantime!!

I am a secondary English teacher in WV, United States. I have a master's degree and hope to continue teaching in NZ. My OH is a research scientist with a PhD in chemistry. Since I am the primary applicant for EOI, my OH may end up changing careers (since had can and has wanted to for a while).

We originally thought we'd settle in Christchurch. We still want that, but we are looking at other options as it may not be realistic to find employment or good housing in a location as popular as Chch.

My oldest daughter will be coming to NZ with us. She visited last Feb through May for a volunteer program in Lower Hutt area. She loved being there and can't wait to go back! She is currently in college here in the states, but she will join us in NZ next winter after she gets her degree in culinary.

My youngest daugther will enter college in California just before we leave for NZ. She is comfortable with her own path, thus is OK with us not being in the US. I know it will be hard leaving her and other family members here, but I suppose that is something we will all have to adjust to.

That's all for now. I just wanted to let you all know that I have been reading your experiences, and I greatly appreciate all the information you share. It has made our process so much easier. It also prepares us for what is to come in this journey.

Christine

Welcome to the forum Christine :cheers

My 21 year old son stayed behind in the UK, it is very hard but you bring them up to be mature and independent etc and this is one of the downsides of that. Doesn't stop it hurting though. :laugh

Good luck with all your plans and keep us updated, please.

Hi Christine and welcome to the forum.
I know how you feel about leaving children behind as we will be leaving our two behind but they will be coming over a year later

Kindest regards

Thanks, everyone! What a warm welcome!

As for leaving one of my children in the US..yes, that is hard. I would prefer that both my daughters come with me, but my youngest is determined to attend a certain college (fingers crossed that she gets in) and head down a specific career path. She knows what she wants.

She is very comfortable and confident sticking with her plan! I have to admire that because when I was 18, I didn't have a clue about my future (nor did I have that level of assurity about my "chosen" path"). She seems to be at peace with her decision and knows that we will only see her a couple times a year. She's an old soul, so I think we'll be Ok. I know we'll miss each other like mad, though, because we are very close.

Well, you never know---she may decide to move there later on or come over on a WHV after finishing up her degree. At that age, it's certainly not good-bye forever;)
