Hi,
I need to visit a clinic to get a prescription and need to know if there is a health card or something that I need to bring with me to obtain care? We have not applied for our IRD number yet, still need to sort that detail out. Is that what we will need?
Thanks,
Wendy

Evidence of your permanent residence status is all they need, ie your passport..
Nice and easy..

the other thing to bear in mind is that if you are on a low income you can get a community services card that will give you reduced fees

When I visited my new GP for the first time, the Admin Assistant at the front desk took my passport, called NHI, and got me an NHI number on the spot. This number is written on your prescriptions, which you take to the chemist, and Bob's Your Uncle.

Wow - I've been here for ages and never shown my doc my passport!
I love this place, I'm always learning something new.

Nor the chemist? And Pharmac has been subsidising your drugs? Wow, no wonder there is such a problem with illegal immigrants using up healthcare allocations, if they're this lax about determining whether people are legitimately entitled to coverage...

True, but I have never had to have any drugs - I've only been to the doctor to get my medical done when I applied for PR, then when I trod on some glass and cut the sole of my foot open and needed a couple of stitches.
I've never been big on going to the doctor - and my flatmate is one, so I ask her opinion usually and save myself the trip.

Asked at a Drs round the corner from us for fees as we are often asked by the backpackers and was told that its $47 for casual drop ins but if you sign up at that practice then its only $27. might be worth some asking around on that theme.

Your medical would not have been subsidised, since you didn't have PR yet, and your stitches would have been covered by ACC, which they give to any poor sod who gets injured in NZ, whether they have PR or not.
