OK so not a great choice of activity for the day I hear you cry!! But I had to put a post on here because I just had my first trip to the rubbish dump & boy it made my day!!
Can't say if this goes for all tips in NZ - I'm thinking probably not, but the rubbish dump at Porirua is set in the middle of beautiful bush - in fact there's a reserve next to the tip!! I went to get rid of some packaging that we've had kicking around in the garage for a while...
They recycle polystyrene (I almost had a car load!)... into underfloor insulation!!
They also had a shop (Trash Palace) where they take all the items that can be sold (that in the tip I used to go to in the UK would have been landfilled!) such as pictures, sports equipment, well all sorts really - at very cheap prices!
They also have a place where workshops are run on recycling & green issues.
I used to regularly visit the tip in England because that was the only way to recycle most of the items since the council didn't bother about taking much from the kerbside and I know that they vary council to council (probably the same here) and that there probably are some amazing projects there too.
I've known since I moved here that it existed, but never had any need to go to the tip until now. I'm going to be going there more often now!! ;)
