Hiya all.
We are hoping to move to BoP in Feb/March 2007. At the mo, we're in Perth W.A.
I would appreciate ay advice on where in BoP to settle. We don't want another big city. We love scenery. Close to schools/shops. With a budget of around $350k to buy a house. We have friends in Mt. Manganui - we wouldn't want to live on their doorstep but do not want to have to drive for hours to see them neither! Heard there are Welsh societies and free Maori lessons in Rotorua - anywhere suiting us around there do you think?
While I'm at it - Is there any point in us bringing the pool?? Will the weather permit it being used??
Cheers :cheers

We went to Whakatane once, to help a kiwi couple to clean up their rental. It is a nice and cosy town in BOP. We like it there very much, in fact, we could see ourselves living there. By the way, there is a shop called Fred's Fish & Chips and it is the best that we ever had. In the weekends, you need to wait at least one & half hours, the queue is really long.

More info.....................
Whakatane is located in New Zealand's Bay of Plenty on the east coast of the North Island. It is an hours drive from Rotorua and Tauranga and is a thriving service centre for many surrounding districts. Whakatane is one of the three sunniest cities in New Zealand. It has one of the countries warmest climates with mild winters and long hot summers.Whakatane is also the gateway to the East Cape, and the Whakatane and Motu Rivers. Activities include jet boating, rafting, dolphin watching, game fishing, bush walks, horse treks, 4x4 tours, hunting trips, helicoptor flights or simply relaxing on beautiful Ohope beach. For those with an interest in the outdoors, the rugged Urewera National Park, the largest protected native forest in the North Island, provides tramping, trout fishing and deer hunting.

If you're used to the country life, then Whakatane will suit. It's a small town with a pleasant atmosphere. I personally would find it a little isolated.

If you're wanting somewhere with more facilities (shops, schools, businesses and bars/restaurants), I can recommend Tauranga. I spent a few months there earlier this year and thoroughly enjoyed it. Mount Manganui has an excellent beach and is always abuzz with people enjoying coffee in the cafes or ice-cream on the beach. Tauranga town centre has a good selection of shops and restaurants and, further out, you have all the big stores.

Hi there,

Happy new year. We recently moved from the U.K to Papamoa in the bay. It is a beautiful place only 6/7 miles to Mount Maunganui. Its a lot quieter than the mount but you are still only a 10 min walk to the beach. The houses are quite affordable here but snap one up soon as they are rising fast, a good place to buy a property. If you want more info send me a PM and let us know how you get on

Hi kiwi_cymraeg,
My friend and her husband (his registration plate is YCYMRO) live in Te Puna, just outside Tauranga having moved there from the Mount about 18 months ago. He is a GP in Tauranga and they love it, both their boys went to Mount Manganui College and are at uni now. They have a good friend (also from Maesteg) called Keith who is an estate agent with Professionals http://tinyurl.com/36bqqx
(They have three offices in the area of Tauranga and the Mount).

Good luck!

Hi there Bethlehem is nice but you would probably be looking at $500k for a nice house.
