REEFER CONTAINER FOR SHIPMENT???

Hi,

We're in the process of getting quotes for moving our furniture/posessions to NZ.

After reading the posts we made it clear we wanted our own 20ft container and not to do groupage.

PSS came out yesterday and told us we didn't have enough stuff for a 20ft but they could provide a "Reefer" container - anyone heard of this? I'm a bit concerned as my partner told me they'd said that Reefers are refrigerated containers and may have had food in them on the way out but would be properly cleaned before the stuff goes in them. :?

He also said something about the fact that normal 20ft containers have to be unloaded and re-packed at the depot at both ends whereas reefers don't - is that right? I thought they usually sealed the container at your property and that was it straight on a ship??? :? :?

Feeling confused & don't know if we're being told right or not. We've also got Crown coming out on Friday so I'm going to probe them & see what they say.

I've heard of a reefer container, I understand it's smaller than a 20 footer but something in the back of my mind tells me it's not sole use. It may be an idea to give Blue a PM 'cos I'm pretty sure she told me she's having a reefer.

As for the containers being packed and re-packed each end ....... never heard of this one. I personally wouldn't go with a company who operate in this way - anything could go missing during these packing/unpacking sessions.

We are using White & Co and they will pack everything here and load the container outside our house. It will then be closed and custom sealed before it leaves my property. It 'shouldn't' be opened again until it reaches the other end.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Diny

I'll get on to Blue straight away.

Yes I thought that re-packing containers sounded a bit dodgy - will have a look at White & Co & get them out for a quote as well.

Cheers! :P

Hiiiii alllllllll……….. I’ve just had a ‘reefer’ myself (wow look at all the weird colours!!!), and I can’t recommend them enough!!! …you can see the music coming out of the speakers man!!… as for packing stuff into ‘em, don’t think you could pack much more ‘stuff’ into the one I just had!!?? :cool

That's exactly what I was thinking, surprised you're the only one that mentioned it.

Well actually I thought along those lines to begin with but decided it wasn't exactly 'PC' to go there !!!!

the whole point of sole-use container is it doesn't have to be opened. kick his ass...

Thanks Leslie - will do - have another couple of companies coming over to quote in the next couple of days - hoping to play them off against each other on pricing :hopeso

Don't forget to haggle on the rates too - it may well be possible to get another company to offer you a 20' container at a lower price than PSS did for the reefer.... rates are especially flexible if you want insurance as this is very profitable for the company that sells it.

Thanks Robert - have the third company coming today - really hoping to play them off against each other... :hopeso

Sarah

Robert is right - play them off against each other. We did and in the end got the price reduced from nearly 4k to 3050.00.

Also - it seems that there's no 'flat rate' with these shipping companies. We're using White & Co. Our quote is totally different to some other quotes that forum members have received from the same company. I guess it all depends on how much 'stuff' you have, where you are located, how many of their staff it will take etc.

Good luck - and get haggling !!!

Thanks shall do thanks for the advice guys - just had PSS £3050 and Crown £3373 in :no - am hoping White and Co come in a lot cheaper :hopeso (PSS quote was based on a smaller container (reefer) which was cheaper than 20ft!!)

Considering we're near PSS and Crown's depots they sound a bit steep to me but as you say Diny, depends on what you're shipping and exact locations.
