We brought a lot of US DVD's with us, we're probably going to start buying some here in NZ. Is there an All-Region DVD player out there? I know it may not be particularly legal in some places, but it'd be nice to have one of these....

Hey guys,
I think by default most dvd players sold here are all region players. At The Warehouse there is a sign that says something like, 'All DVD players are multi-region unless otherwise specified'. We bought one from there and it plays our US dvds just fine! I think the US is one of the only places in the world that restricts the DVD players to their specific region. Hope that helps.

It won't be a problem. We're looking at getting a new one (our current one is multi-region, but it's from the very early days of DVDs) and according to my partner who's doing the research they're very easy to find and often no more or only slightly more expensive.

I'll second tchelseat. Our Pioneer dvd player (model dv-383) bought here in NZ has a region 4 mark on the back but actually plays everything. The sales person told us that the only real problems are with buying a Sony here. He said Sony is often not region free. (The Pioneer was cheaper anyway.)

Hi,
We're looking to bring our DVD player over and thought about buying a new one when we got there (to go with the nice plasma telly I've been promised for being a good boy :D ) until I found this link:

Have followed the destructions for our player, just need a different region DVD now to test it. Maybe this is a sign that I should buy series 1 of 'House' from the US............

Thanks for the info. We won't have to play our bought-in-Canada DVDs through the laptop?!?

We bought a new DVD player at The Warehouse. They had a printout of instructions on how to hack the DVD players to make them region free, it had about 20 models on there they sell. Was pretty easy. Thanks!

Just thought I'd add some info about laptops. My American bought laptop, can play other region DVD's, but only allows a certain number (3 I think?) switches. I used it in the US, then the first time I put a NZ DVD in, it recognized it as a different region and asked if I wanted to use up one of my "switches". I don't have any US DVD's, but if I did, I wouldn't be able to watch both on my laptop. Make sense?
