I am a US trained nurse just graduated with an associates degree in May 2006, then moved to NZ with family. I hold a registered nurse license in Florida and could nurse in any state in the US. Was told by NZ nursing counsel that getting registration would not be a problem, but after many months of waiting, the nursing council decided that my training was not equivelent and that they will not issue me a license to practice nursing. Just wondered if anyone has had similar experience here and any advice for overcoming decision. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Wendy

Hi Wendy

Sorry, can't give any real constructive advice but was wondering what field of nursing you work in? I'm trained in Intellectual Disability nursing and found it difficult to find a job from the UK and ended up going through an agency based in Auckland who found me a job in Dunedin before we arrived. They were really helpful and gave me some good advice, the company is called Healthlink and they have contacts with all the local DHB's throughout the country.

I know that UK trained nurses have to sit exams in the US before they can practice but l didn't have to take any exams to practice here, maybe it's the same for US nurses who want to work here?

Good luck

Karen
