I'm interested in hearing more about gifted ed in NZ from parents, educators and friends of bright kids ...

Looked at the giftedchildren.org.nz website...

Which schools (public and private) in which communities are doing an OUTSTANDING job of taking quick learners to the to their fullest potential?

Which schools are offering the most innovative, cutting edge programs - going beyond the "3 R's" and offering truly exciting and enriching programs?

Which schools offer multi-age programs allowing kids to work with others at the same intellectual level regardless of age?

What do you know about George Parkyn One Day Schools? Discovery School?

Names of schools/districts/GATE administrators would be helpful as we may be moving without having visited first, or even if we do make a scouting trip first, it would be much smoother to know just where to visit when we arrive.

Responses to my question will guide where we settle as we'll be involved in the school system for another 8-10 years and we're hoping to find a school that does an outstanding job with their GATE programs!

Quality schools committed to innovative gifted ed, truly anywhere in the country, are tops on our priority list...so I'm open to hearing from EVERYONE North or South Island, urban or rural, public or private schools!

I would have thought your best available source of information would have been George Parkin themselves or the Gifted and Talented website.
Although to be brutally honest there seems to be more posts berating the current school system than actually talking about positive things that are happening.

There will only be a small percentage of parents on here dealing with G and T directly - I just think you will get much more information directly from the horses mouth so to speak.

I only know of the Christchurch area and that in the city there is a Discovery School for the primary aged kids and Unlimited for the older ones. there is also a school for gifted children in the Ilam region that one of our customers is very happy with and the children concerned are great kids, totally unassuming but confident.

I think this is quite a well thought of school, but I'm afraid I don't have any personal experience of it, apart from I often see the kids doing their running round the Windsor Reserve.

"APPLETREE EDUCATION CENTRE, Devonport

Explorer School

The school for explorers, adventurers and discoverers
Primary/Intermediate. Ages 6-12. Central Devonport.
Advanced learning programmes. Strong literacy, science and mathematics.
Wide range of creative, academic and practical experiences. Specialists in all fields are a regular part of the teaching team to enrich and extend learning.
Home schoolers welcome.
After school computer-assisted tuition available."

I got the quote from the gifted site, so you've probably already seen it. Strange they don't seem to have a web site, perhaps its all word of mouth.

Cheers

Tia
