Recently got the green light to make the move (permanant residency/skilled migrant) !!!:raebanana !!!

Considering packing up and coming sight unseen (!!) but if we make a scouting trip for 2-4 weeks, with an 8 yr old, any reccomendations for lodging for new emigrants checking out communities from the northern to southern tip of NZ? Clean, quiet, safe, moderately priced, privately owned or chains...

Lonely Planet travel book (NZ) has very good recommendations, arranged by price as well if you are budgeting!

Go onto the www.bbh.co.nz site it lists all the BBH hostels in NZ and the cost. not all will take children but most will consider it as the child is 8.

Hi there,

We stopped at a 5-star backpackers in Paihia, Bay of Islands, a couple of months ago, it was called Saltwater Lodge. All rooms were en suite, fridge/tea coffee making. Very clean and definately family friendly, I would certainly recommend it.

the other places worth looking into are the top 10 holiday parks, they are mainly camping and caravaning but they also have little cabins that would be fine for you. again its a get onto the website thing.

The top ten holiday park cabins are nice, we have stayed in one with a baby, if you get one of the top rated parks, there are lots of facilities too like pools.

Don't know where you are based but I picked up 'AA Accomodation' and 'AA What to See and Do in NZ' (two thick books like Rough Guide) free from the Visitor Info Centre at New Zealand House in the Strand. If you going to travel around you will need an accomodation guide to help you stay flexible... it's very difficult to plan these things in advance in my experience. If you get somewhere and don't like it you won't want to hang around, especially if you have limited time here in NZ.
