Hi there everyone.

Firstly i would like to say how much i like this forum and the people who post on it, talk about information overload it's great. :nice1

As my wife and i are very interested in migrating to New Zealand with our 8 month old baby boy, this site has been very useful indeed.

Anyway here's my question, I am for my sins, a Quantity Surveyor :? with 12 years experience, and would be very interested to know if anyone knows what the current demand is like for this particular profession.

I plan on visiting early next year to check the job scene out for myself but in the meantime if anyone has any thoughts on this could you please let me know.

Thanks

Adrian

Hi the answer is yes, my partner Ian is a QS also with the same amount of experience as you and we went out to Wellington in October - he got a job in the first interview (within an hour they offered on the spot) and he's going to be one of their more senior surveyors - there's a high demand - its on the Occupational Shortages List for every region.

I'll PM you the contact details of the agencies (there are 2) that specialise in QS roles. One of the agencies was at the NZ show in London recently and are doing a recruitment drive for the company Ian has joined.

Ian's job starts in January - the company were very good - they asked him if he'd like to spend Xmas at home and to name his start date!

As a plasterer there probably isn't going to be much contribution I can make to this thread. Though in my line of work I got a job with the first and only company I spoke to. Looking at NZ quali's in construction they seem to be not as good as the UK and that can only be reflective of the industry. Though I think its fair to say that good english trades will be snapped up because of the diversity of our industry and our technology. I would say you had no worries.

1 in 12 people work in the construction industry in the UK, don't know figures for NZ.

cheers dan

They seem to be screaming out for everybody who has a connection with the building industry/trades here so you should be fine.
