My husband and I are hoping to make it to NZ by Sept. 07 and we are at a loss as to how much $$ we will really need to bring with us and whether or not we are being unrealistic.

We currently own our condo in Canada and will need to sell it before we leave to make the move. We will likely rent for the first while once in NZ then look to purchase a home within a year.

If we were to arrive in NZ with about $85,000 in NZ dollars...would this be a reasonable amount to get us started, rent for a while and then make a downpayment on a home? Not sure what percentage of downpayment is required over there....in Canada we range from zero to 25% (or more if you want!) My husband is a residential carpenter and we are not sure what kind of salary this would afford us. I currently work for myself and would like to set up the same situation in NZ. We plan to have children fairly soon upon our arrival so we would like to be able to live on one salary for a while if possible.

Any suggestions welcome....thanks!

We came over with less so yes you will be ok, if you look around the areas that have reasonable house/job wage comparisons and you should be fine. But you will find somethings are expensive and money can easily fritter away. but if you budget then you should be fine.

Carpenters are usually not out of work - lots of work available (well I see ads for them in the Southland times regularly) wages are comparible to other trades (I think the carpenters at work get $20+ depending on experience)

you didnt say what you did at home - but I do know that there are lots of firms that do job share, hours to suit working mothers etc - infact they seem more flexible here than they did in my home town in the UK.

good luck

Kat
