Do you speak Maori? As I am going to be working in a mainly maori school, I want to learn a bit before we go.
I have bought a beginners guide from amazon, but there seemed to be a lack of language learning audio materials out there. Anyone got any suggestions?

I've found a couple of useful sites over the years, you can probably find something through them:
http://arabiatimes.tripod.com/maori.htm
http://kel.otago.ac.nz/translator/
The first one has a link at the top of the page to an Australian Language Shop, they also sell audio tape guides in Maori for Adult education.
Hope this help,
baz

I know there are courses you can do sometimes in London, I don't know if these extend to other parts of the country

thanks Bgreen, I had found the second link but not the first. It has some quaint phrases on it "This custom is bad"! etc
Used to play a game when hitchhiking through Spain, entertained drivers by reading out the most ridiculous phrases; my fave was "Help! There is a man molesting a woman on the promenade!"

Hey hey
Mike - have pm'd you out of nosiness, but in general terms I think you'll pick up as much maori as you need once you're out here. My hubbie teaches in a 50% maori school, and he is picking up the key words as he goes along (mostly sit down, shut up, do your b*****y work - they sound the same in English!). Don't know if the tapes etc could ever help you with the accent! In fact, depending where you are, you might find that a lot of maori don't speak te reo, as it was heavily discouraged for a long time.
