Does anyone know what checks NZIS actually do once your EOI is selected and before they send the ITA?

Great question. I am not sure if they have the bandwidth to check on all the various details an applicant provides. Perhaps they go with a high level scan and zero-in on files that look fishy? But that is pure speculation on my part.

My impression was that they look for obvious falsehoods. But I think what is important to remember is that they have the right to check every piece of information that you give, so if you were to risk adding something that wasn't true, they could turn down your whole application.

I believe they will look through your submission and verify that your details are correct and the areas that you are claiming points for are genuine.

"Then, if your EOI is selected from the Pool, and the claims you have made are verified, we may send you an Invitation to Apply for residence."

"Verification - Our process of confirming that your details and information are genuine and correct." from NZIS website.

A lot of people seem to claim points that they shouldn't and NZIS need to check this - if that is the case your EOI submission is put back into the pool.

Hope this helps a little?

Yes. I think it is worth reflecting on the likely reason for NZIS having introduced the EOI 'layer' of the process in the first place:

I imagine that it was put in place to help everyone in the process. It is a way for a prospective applicant to sketch the details of their case without having, early on, to chase and gather masses of hard evidence, etc. Similarly NZIS can glance through an EOI and give a pretty sound "Yes", "No" or "Clarify" without having to wade through huge packs of applicant paperwork from all and sundry (such unwieldy packs sent upfront by so many people would also quickly become a pain in terms of keeping their papers safe and together).

That said, then, I imagine that the check that is done is probably an eyeball check rather than (or as well as) a computer check. I suggest this because I think that the majority of EOI-stage problems are, e.g., from applicants not realizing that the institution where they got their qualifications will necessitate their particular qual getting an NZQA assessment first. If a computer checked this, not a person, how would the computer know how to interpret any one of a number of weird abbreviations or mis-spellings that the applicant might use when writing/entering the name of their institution? ISTR that the applicant has to write such names and details rather than the EOI purely being a YES/NO-style form.
There might be a computer check, too, but I imagine that this would be a fairly simple routine, just to check any parts of the form that do have clear-cut, computer-assess-able answers.

In summary: all the above is my guess, based on nothing :laugh . I think the EOI is a way for to make sure candidates fit pre-set NZIS criteria before anyone invests time gathering or assessing evidence, paying for medicals, etc. Thus I think the checks are straightfoward, genuine checks of an EOI filler's personal and professional history as stated. All parties (surely?) realize that proof and evidence will inevitably have to be presented eventually by suitable PR candidates: but the EOI stage saves everyone, suitable or not, a lot of time and money. And, of course, NZIS puts pressure on the prospective applicant to do some points-calculating work and similar 'self policing' before the EOI itself is even filled in and submitted.

If the EOI system wasn't in place, by the way, I think the number of disgruntled, frustrated or crestfallen (potential) applicants would be considerably higher. :yes

My understanding was that they also do some initial checks such as with dept work and pensions, to see if you have lived/claimed benefits in NZ before, security checks (e.g. police records in NZ), whether you have applied for PR before and since been deported!!! and so on, i.e. the kind of info that could be kept on their own data systems

As Tigerlily say's they are looking for obvious falsehoods .. and photocopies are not acceptable.

My own impression of the EOI process is that they will only look superficially at the details you have provided and whether you have the proof to back it up .. the hard stuff comes later. I had to scan in all my work proof / payslips etc etc and email it over to my Case Officer before he would issue an ITA. Then with the ITA I had to supply original copies of all documentation that I had scanned for him - and produce a number of new pieces of evidence. In other words, just because you have enough to satisfy your VO that he should let you apply - it does not mean that is all he will need to approve your application, there may still be some hoops to jump through.

It's interesting to think that they might run initial checks with NZ authorities - I suppose it might just be a quick run through the computer.

If you have claimed point s for a job offer they will check this out with the company offering you the position before they will send you the ITA, we had to supply them with all the contact details so they could verify everything.

lots of people get bonus points for work exp/quals wrong so they check that those make sense (eg you can't claim points for work experience in a future growth area unless you have a job offer in NZ)

Interesting reading thank you. Some of the points made would only make sense for a written EOI application though as the online version doesn't seem to allow you to make some of the mistakes mentioned.
Thanks for all your comments though..very interesting, cheers
