We are renting out our flat in Edinburgh while we are in NZ. As well as the mortgage payments and the agency charges, we are also paying life insurance - critical illness cover etc, to cover the mortgage should we get squished in an earthquake or fall off a mountain... Is everyone else that is renting out keeping a life insurance package going in the UK? Am I right in thinking this is not optional - that you have to have life insurance if you have a mortgage?? I should really know this but the whole life insurance thing confuses me! :?

Ruthyroo. I am no expert on the subject, but (there is always a BUT with insurance co.s) if I were you I would double check that these policys cover you when you are resident in another country.

Hi Ruthyroo
We had to re-mortgage to a buy to let mortgage, cause our orginal mortgage company wouldnt play ball and did it all through our financial advisor. We had a life assurance already running and he advised us to keep it. If anything happens to me or hubby (or both of us) the UK mortage gets paid off. Might be an idea to discuss it with a financial advisor.

I am renting out my property in Sussex and I don't have life insurance - I guess it depends on whether the sale of the property will cover the mortgage? In my case it does...
Gosh, I miss Edinburgh - used to live in Lansdowne Crescent in the West End :P before moving to Perthshire (near Dollar).... Have some great memories of wild nights in Edin... if we ever had to move back to the UK it would be to Edin... :nice1
Did you see the epispode of Location Location Location that they did in Edinburgh with the couple who eventually moved into a mews house in Dean village area? That was my best mate.. !!
