My DH works at a wood processing mill here in the States but works on his off days as an electrician for a small electric company. He was trained on the job and worked 4 years part time for them. They do residential and commercial work. He is not licensed but is checking into that.
What, if any, benefit is this to him in finding a job in NZ? I know there is a shortage and that the qualifications are different. What would be his next course of action as far as NZ is concerned?

Also, checked out a job recruitment website that had salaries for electricians and I was appalled at the LOW wages!! :eek

Does anyone have any info about salaries that would be more encouraging? I would think if they have such a shortage, they would be trying to make it more appealing by raising the wages!! :?
Thanks in advance!

Tate6,

I am no spark but do have a friend who is and is going as one. I think the first thing you would be best doing is getting in touch with the NZ electrician's registration board, can't think what there web address is but if you put a search on the forum i am sure something will pop up for you. You will have to sit there exam which my friend is doing in December before you can register with the reg's board. Once that is done you are legal to work, without it you could struggle.
Wages:........ My friend has a job offer which is going to pay him roughly NZ$40,000 it is low but i think their standard of living is 30% lower than here in the UK, but unsure what the difference is coming from the States.

Hope i have been of help to you...............

Hey Kim!

Thanks so much! That is helpful! The salaries listed made it sound like under $30,000 was the norm. So your amount sounds better! I know some of the things will be different over there, but hopefully it won't be too difficult to learn.

We have just had an electrician do some work on our place and the going rate seems to be about $40 an hour if they work for themselves.

Thanks, Veronica.
That sounds more like here, where it is $50 just to get them here and then $50 an hour plus cost of materials!! :eek
So DH could look into this and be able to support a family of six! :nice1
Poor guy! :angel
