Afternoon All,

In light of all the Christmas sales I've been comparing prices for LCD & plasma tv's.

I've seen that a 40" LCD from Samsung can be had from Comet for under £1,000.00 :nice1 , but OH mentioned (after I got all excited) that she'd read a posting on here that taking TV's to NZ was a bit hit & miss :( .

I must admit that I couldn't find it, however, I do remember seeing on the NZIS CD that you shouldn't take them as they won't work.

Anybody got any thoughts?

Ta,

Beano

It seems to be a bit hit and miss. Although I thought as long as it was quite new and a decent brand it should work. Bit of a gamble for £1000 though. Have a look at the links below.

A bit more expensive in NZ - but at least you've got the reassurance that it will work over there!

I think modern TVs are more compatible to differing broadcast formats than they used to be - but that's no guarantee that when you get to NZ you won't be stuck with a rather large plastic and glass ornament.

However, I think all TVs will work if you run them as a monitor through a NZ video player (not sure if Dvd player performs the same task - last time I watched a foreign telly set in NZ it was in the days when VCR was king)

Hi
The tv system here is a PAL system but not the same as the uk, we brought our tv's over and found we could get picture but no sound, the solution was to buy a vcr, connect via the av socket and use the vcr as the tuner, however if your after an lcd then maybe safer to buy here in case of any problems, warranty etc

As i said a few weeks ago, 99% of all new TVs should be able to work on all TV standards. The UK uses PAL I and NZ uses PAL B/G - if a new TV can't do both, then I wouldn't buy it to be honest!

We just bought a new sony tv in uk as old one packed up.The tv can be programmed to Pal B/G plus several other frequencies.
We looked at several tvs and all of them could be used on both frequencies.
Hope this helps

A word of caution though - our widescreen Sony TV (36" 5 years old) really didn't like NZ, although it picked up some channels (with sound) the TV tuner frequency band didn't go low enough to pick up all of them - although if you run the signal through an NZ video/Sky box it was fine.

Also, UK TV's often have "purity" problems e.g. green/yellowy edges on the picture. The purity problem is being caused by the Tv being made for the northern hemisphere and being affected by the southern hemisphere earth's magnetic field. Degaussing may help, but the cure for this is to remove and replace the picture tube 180 deg and then reset purity and convergence etc. I have done this on two other Sony Tv's bought in the UK, but it's not easy!

With the current dollar rate I think you'd be mad to buy a new one in the UK before moving...
