Hi all

My name is Wayne and like so many, I too have been scoping this forum for a while; the information is superb and invaluable to prospective kiwis. We are a family of three (incl. wife Liana and daughter Cassidy) who plan to leave our native South Africa early next year via the skilled migration option.
I have filled in the online EOI and have scored 130 points already, but want to go for the minimum140 points for automatic selection from the pool. Thus we have done the NZQA pre-assessment of Liana’s qualifications; however when I enter these details and the minimum English language ability (as per principle applicant), the point generator doesn’t add the 10 points to our total. What do I have to do to get the system to allocate the points? Anybody had similar difficulty? Please assist, because we’d like to submit and get the process going.

hi wayne

do you have either a job offer or bonus points for work experience in an area of absolute skills shortage? if so 130 points will get you selected anyway.

i'm not sure whats causing the problem but it might be worth giving NZIS a call?

Thanks for the info Trigirl, yes I am claiming bonus points for work experience in an area of absolute skills shortage (no job offer though), it is reassuring to know that 130 points is adequate under these circumstances. I would like to know whether the online EOI form point allotment for NZQA pre-assessed qualifications happens automatically or does it get reviewed before points are allocated. In other words am I doing something wrong?
I have even started a new form and the same thing happened, the system allocated points for everything else except the spouse’s qualifications. It also doesn’t matter what type of NZQA assessment or what NQF level I enter, the only thing that comes to mind is the impact the English language proficiency of the spouse has on the allotment of points.
Will contact NZIS, but in the meantime if anyone who claimed points for the spouse’s qualifications using the online EOI form could just relate to whether their bonus points were allocated immediately and what their details were wrt assessment type; NQF level assessed and spouse's English proficiency.
Tall ask, but I’m convinced the forum members can assist on this cookie.

there's absolutely no way it is supposed to be reviewed before points are allocated. the first time it will be looked at by a human being is when its pulled from the pool.

we had points for my qualifications (not NZQA assessed as they are on the list of recognised quals) - we put in my qualification as level 7 and english language proficiency was as required for principle applicant (english as first language) and we got the 10 points allocated on the spot. what NZQA level are liana's quals assessed at?

Hi

I did find that, when I was doing it myself, there were occasions where I'd answered the main question in a section but hadn't filled in an answer to a supplementary point and the points weren't caluclated until the whole of the relevant section had been completed.

Also, here is the text of some additional guidelines (mentioned above) for supplementary points for EOIs scoring between 100 and 140 points (in order of desirability) from the immigration service website.
"The Minister of Immigration has set the following additional selection criteria for selections from the Pool occurring from 1 August 2006 – 1 February 2007 (inclusive):
(a) EOIs that include 15 points for work experience in an area of absolute skills shortage (in descending order of their points total);
(b) EOIs that include 10 points for work experience in an area of absolute skills shortage (in descending order of their points total)
(c) EOIs that include 10 points for a qualification in an area of absolute skills shortage (in descending order of their points total);
(d) the points total of EOIs not meeting any of the criteria in (a) – (c) (in descending order).

Good luck. Jane

Thanks for all the replies, Liana's qualification was laso assessed at level 7. It is good to know that the electrinic EOI points are generated in realtime and do not have any need for human approval; I therefor must be getting stuck on a supplimentary question which is causing non allocation of points. Relating to the additional guidelines (mentioned by Nelsonian) does it mean that having 130 points which include :
15 points for work experience in an area of absolute skills shortage and
10 points for a qualification in an area of absolute skills shortage; will result in automatic selection from EOI pool? Let me know please.

its not automatic selection. what happens is they automatically select everyone with 140 points or a job offer. then if they haven't hit their quota for that pool they next select people with 15 points for work exp, then if they still haven't hit their quota they select people with 10 points for work exp etc etc.

so its not guaranteed.

but recently they have always selected people with 15 points for work exp - if you only have 10 points then you might have to wait a little while.

if you want more info on who has been selected then go here

http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/general/generalinformation/news/

and look at each one headed up Skilled Migrant Fortnightly selection. Each fortnight they give a breakdown of how many have been selected with 140 points, how many with 15 points for work exp etc.

We were immediately selected from the pool with 135 points and no job offer.

The immigration site will let you update your EOI points if anything changes in your situation or if you "discover" something you missed (at least I'm pretty sure it says that on the EOI page), so you could always update later.

My OH and I hoped for 140 and kept dinging around for months trying to figure out how to get just 5 more points. Finally, I decided to go for it, and like I said, we were immediately selected with 135. I think it is worth a shot. Regardless of what the points calculation does regarding your spouse's points (it must surely have something to do with a box you are ticking or not ticking??), you should enter the info for her preassessment and submit the thang :D

An update:
I got in contact with NZIS via the online help facility. They were extremely efficient in getting back to me with possible causes and remedies to fix the non allocation of bonus points, however nothing seemed to help. I the decided to start from scratch (again) and dump all EOI I was working on. I created a new EOI form, but again the system would not allocate the bonus points. Looking at the summary sheet, I had a (small) light bulb moment! And it was staring at me for so long. I NEVER COMPLETED THE PRINCIPLE APPLICANT'S IDENTITY DETAILS. It registered as incomplete (due to too many digits in the contact number entry field). As soon as I made the required changes all was fine and we had the 10 bonus points in the bag.
Now we can submit with 140 points (and a lot more confidence)

Yay! Glad you pinpointed the oversight. Good Luck with your EOI!
