Bit of a poll. Just wondering what all of us migrants are wanting to do to pay the rent when we are settled? And is this different from what you did/do for a living in your home country?

The job I'll be doing in NZ is pretty much the same as here, hardware design engineer, but only in a different field.
Salary's also pretty much equal, so that should pay the rent :cheers

Programming.
In fact, I'm hoping that I can keep many of my current clients. All of them are located in a different state than where I'm located. Doubt they'd really notice if I were in a completely different country.

I'm a housewife here in the UK. I plan to continue being one for a few months after arriving in NZ. Once we're settled into a house, kids are in school and some level of normality has returned to our lives, I hope to start up a coffee shop/gift shop where I can (hopefully) show folks I can make a mean cake, and also to try to sell some of my hand painted greetings cards etc. I shall be seriously looking into it.
As for PB .... no change for him. His job will stay exactly the same. Same oil rig, same crew, same employers - same everything. The only thing that will change for him is that he will fly to Egypt from Auckland instead of Manchester.

I`m lucky I get a pension from my old UK employer so while my other half is off at work I intend to go hunting, shooting, fishing and golfing.
It`s a hard life but someone has to do it!

I hope to get a job first! Anything that will enable me to pay the rent...whatever we will be bringing with us to NZ might not be able to last very long.
Actually, I want to do somthing that I have been doing all this while - Auditing.
Eventually, I would like to open an Asian restaurant of some sorts with my wife. She is a great cook although she thinks otherwise. So, I have a lot of convincing to do before she agrees with the idea!

In into project management (IT) here in Manila but wants to be a housemom to my 2 kids in NZ (if our finances would permit). My dear husband is an engineering head hear but we're expecting that he'll be downgraded down there. He'll be fine as line or manufacturing engineer.

I'll do anything, as long as I get the points for a skilled offer of employment!
At the moment I work in the Financial Administration field, I can't really see it changing - but I'm open to offers!

Other half is a hairdresser in UK but wants to try something different. As she runs her own business here in the UK we are looking if she can do book keeping or something similar possibly part time, to bring in a little extra.
We are looking a correspondance courses in NZ book keeping to do before we go over, hopefully next year.

I have been in IT for too long and would like to find something in the artisan bakery field. I am an avid home baker and would like to find something along those lines...
My husband will stay in the wine/vineyard management area. This is his passion.
Hope our dreams and yours do come true...
Good luck to you all....

Work less!!! Here in the US I work 40 hours a week as an estate agent (don't throw anything at me!) and 30 hours as a bartender (I'll pour the drinks when we get to the SI). My wonderful fiance waits tables 4 nights a week, teaches english 2 nights a week, instructs in skiing 1 or 2 days a week and then substitutes at the schools as well, whew!
Nothing definite. I have an offer to work as an estate agent in NZ, but think I may decline it. Really want to get back in the field, I'm an archaeologist by training. Who cares, as long as we're in NZ!!!! :yes

1st be a normal family. hub architect. me photography /marketing. both hoping to develop more design-based stuff relevant to interests, possibly teach adult ed course at auck u (1 each) and who knows what else. hub very tired keeping bums-on-seats in a very competitive market. could use a few months to slow down. if we can get in without employment we can look at whats on offer and get more specific once there. life in england is too restrictive in many ways - space to grow will be great. it doesn't help that certain people in the uk establishment still believe in social orders and the importance of retaining them.
some brits will be missed less than others...

DH works in a wood processing mill as a supervisor--12-14 hour days!! :wah But he has a few different options. He will send resume to Weyerhaueser wood processing mill in Nelson. Also, he works part time as an electrician--not licensed yet. So that is an option. We have friends who own a beef jerky plant in Auckland, so if nothing else, that is another option. In the Navy, he was an air structural mechanic on Helicopters. Our friends have a friend who is a hunting guide in ChCh so he is really hoping he may be able to get a job working with them, either on helos or with the guides. He has some good choices.
I am first and foremost, a stay-at-home-mom. I sub as an aide with elementary kids and in the office at the school here. Started a humane society here in our area a few years back and love animals. Also, my sister and I used to own a decorating/painting business--before my last two were born. Hard to find time to do that with 4 kids going in different directions. :eek So I am leaving my options open. Maybe decorating again, or something with animals. Or who knows...I'll keep dreaming....
Fun to read what others are doing......Best of luck to you all!! :nice1

Film music composition. Hoping to keep some of my US clients while I attempt to get in on the ground floor of the still developing NZ film industry which, up till now, has shown an unfortunate propensity to do a lot of its post-production work in Hollywood. Cynthia hopes to teach violin and Alexander technique and play orchestra and chamber music gigs.
We're not exactly at the top of NZ's skills shortage list. :?

Me, I'm probably going to keep on as a technical writer/web developer for my current employer, at least for awhile. With any luck, though, my fiancee can take her graphic-artist talents out of advertising and into something less soul-sucking!
Thanks for this great topic!

Given up marketing consultant career (gulp, there, I said it and there goes my comfort blanket and income!!) - it's hard not doing a job and dare I say it .. it's actually hard being a lady of leisure!! :?
Want to get into photography, expand my writing and generally do something different and more akin to life in NZ.... :nice1
Was due to volunteer at the Canterbury Museum but quite frankly I don't see the point in travelling all the way into town at my own expense and working for nowt!! Well, was a good idea at the time, and if I was nearer I'd probably do it but not from Sumner.....

Don't worry, it is probably only for 3 months to get them over a busy period then, unless I can prove it works well, I will be back on the job market next year. :(
At least it gets me past the Xmas period as I didn't really expect to get a job until next year anyway.

I am working for my employer in the UK from NZ just as Richard(Hubby) is. :nice1 :nice1
I was working from home in the UK doing hours that fitted in around the children, only being paid for the hours I worked, so, when they get around to sending me more work, I shall be doing the same from CHCH!!Same job and paid UK rates too but mine unlike Richard's will be long term!!

Wow, lots of talented people on this site :clap
Well, I'll still be nursing (neonatal) for a few years. My long term goal is to get into sign language interpretation - a particular interest of mine.
Hubby is in IT (sybase DBA) - so hopefully will find something in his field of expertise so that I don't have to work full time. Not being lazy, just find looking after a 3 year old and an 18 month old and working a bit difficult at the moment (esp as I keep having to take time off cos the kids are sick!!).
Anyway, hoping that this time next year we'll be there!!

Looks like I'm in bed with Richard & Tanya!
I'm paid out of Houston in US dollars, work 28 days offshore Egypt and (when the house sells in the UK) spend two days getting back to NZ for nearly a month, then back to the Med again.
6 months off a year is tough, but hey, someones gotta do it!

my husband will be moving his wireless (cell phone) gaming studio to wellington, accompanied by one or two of his co-founders :cool i also work in that industry, so i might just join the company, unless we need more stability during the transition. should work out really well, as they will be getting international contracts for international $$$ :yes
if i don't work for the "family biz," i'll find some other outlet for my drawing skills, and/or maybe finish that children's book i've been writing!
i also am really into bellydancing (aka middle eastern dance), so if there aren't many teachers in the area, maybe i'll start my own class!
