Very specific to Wellington I know - this market has been mentioned a couple of times on here but I went for the first time today and so wanted to mention it again for anyone who like me is new to Wellington.
Its only there on Sunday mornings - I wandered down there about 9.30am and there were about 10 sellers there - each with a huge variety of fruit and veg. I stocked us up for the week - kumara, red onions, mushrooms, carrots, celery, asparagus, courgettes, coriander. all good quality stuff and all for the princely sum of $12.20 :clap

There's also one on Sunday mornings near the top end of Willis St, near the Unicomm buildings, which may be more convenient for some people.

And the one on Saturday morning in Porirua is AMAZING!
It's all cleared by 9am though - so you need to be there early.

Where in Porirua is it? And what time would be best to go?

Hi Louise - it is just next to where the white canopies are - in the large carpark by McDonalds.
I've only ever been around 8am - never up early enough! But I think it starts from around 6am?
The food is fantastic. But I've never been brave enough to have spicy stuff at that time of the morning :laugh

I'm with Carol, the Porirua one is very good if you can get up early.
There's also a farmers market at Moore Wilsons in Porirua, on Fridays and Saturdays with about 30 stalls.
The market at Te Papa on Sundays is very good too, especially if you don't want to be up at 6 am. It goes on until around 1 pm. :clap:clap

Yes, you could get the train but you'd put your back out carrying all those bags. :uhoh
Did you get coffee while cruising with your trolley in MW's Fresh? Oh and try their danish pastries from the fresh bakery, to die for. Yumm Yum.

:) I LOVE the Porirua market on a Saturday - yep you'll need a car or an old people's shopping trolley - I usually have to go back to the car & unload my bags half-way through my shop!! Moore Wilsons farmer's market (haven't been in but have driven up & had a nosey through their door) looks v. good.
Hmmmm I may even nip down to the Porirua market this Saturday since we've got visitors - I usually take $10, buy the entire week's veggies/fruit for us & visitors & still come home with change!!

Hi all...
Wairarapa farmers have in the last few weeks started their own market selling their yummy produce in Masterton...Will no doubt become popular for locals and weekenders alike :yes

many thinks to everyone who mentioned the porirua market. i finally made it up there this morning and it certainly lives up to its billing! lots of choice and so very very cheap.

We went to the Te Papa market last week-end and were SO relieved to see the selection and the prices - we'd looked at 3 different groceries and been shocked at how expensive fruits & vegetables were! Though I think we did mitigate the cost and health benefits a bit by succumbing to a stick of fried dim sum (yum cha) - my OH wants to bring home pork buns from the same vendor tomorrow :uhoh
We had great farmers' markets in our California hometown but they were always quite a bit more expensive than grocery produce. I liked to support organic/local farmers but sometimes that was pretty tough on the food budget.

We did go there too. Its a bit hard to tell as a lot of the stall holders were on christmas break - lots of stalls with signs up saying back 19th Jan - some even 26th Jan. I guess I'd probably not go back to go specifically to the Moore Wilsons market but if I was up there anyway for the porirua one I'd drop in.

Trigirl - thanks :nice1
I wasn't sure if I should co ordinate a Welly shopping trip with the farmers market day. May be not then. :D
