Hi all,
We have just had 2 very pleasant men in our house all day packing up our stuff. They're coming back tomorrow with the container and even though we have paid John Masons a small fortune, I want to give them a tip as these 2 have been great.
Is this the done thing? Can I be really nosey and ask what everyone else did? How much is acceptable and how much is insulting?
Never know what to do with these things!

The packers we had in the U.S. and the unpackers we had in NZ were a great bunch of people who worked really hard. I really felt that certain things they chose to do (or the way they chose to do them), and their willingness to honour special requests I made during the process made my life much easier. So I gave each of them $20 (USD or NZD, as the case might be).
Something else to consider is making cold bottles of water and snacks available for them during the packing/unpacking process; this seemed to be greatly appreciated by packers/unpackers.

Ours were given the remaining cans of beer from the cellar, about 4 cans each I think. As you say you have already paid a small fortune for the job doing, and no doubt supplied them with tea biscuits and butties!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our packers were fantastic, hard working and had a wicked sense of humour, (something we found out when we unpacked!). We gave them 10 pounds each and all the tea and coffee they wanted.

Bacon butties, loads of coffee and biscuits and £10 each. They were great blokes and worked hard. They even packed all the spare stuff we didn’t expect to get in.

Wait till you get to the other side. You might find they didn't do such a good job! My tip to ours would be to find a better 'labelling' system - 'odds' was pretty difficult to decipher!!

That's why we did a self pack - I'm such a control freak! :roll

Our crew worked like crazy especially the second day when they had to repack due to the appraiser screwing up, so we had too much stuff to fit in the container (totally not THEIR fault & they got stuck having to pull out low-priority things from the back of the container that wouldn't fit & repacking). They didn't even take a lunch break the second day & bought their own drinks & snacks both days so we tipped them quite a bit, though we weren't sure if that was the standard or not.

Isn't it lovely? :nice1
In the UK we had 2 packers who worked their socks off for 9 hours. We gave them all the food and drink they could manage and 20 quid each.
We've moved twice here and given them $20 a man each time. I know they get paid to do a job but if they're helpful and make moving less stressful for me, I'm happy to give them some beer money for the journey home!
We never tip in restaurants or anywhere else here. I still tip the hairdresser but we have a fight about it each time. :laugh
