We camped at Tawharanui Regional Park in the weekend.

It's really beautiful up there, lovely beaches, and heaps of birds as the park is an "open sanctuary" - they've erected a big predator-proof fence across the peninsula to keep pests out. As the brochure puts it, "The 588 hectare park is NZ's first integrated open sanctuary where farming, public recreation and conservation of native species combine." So there are sheep and cows around too.
It's only about 90 minutes from Auckland so it makes a nice day trip - we felt like going camping so we reserved a campsite. The campground is big grass fields (put your tents where you like) close to the beach. (You have to book in advance.) We really enjoyed it.

Also worth checking out in the area is the Goat Island marine reserve
