Hi there
Is there anyone there in Featherston within commuting distance to Wellington central that can comment on any similarities or (hopefully) differences to Wellington's notorious climate i.e., frequent high winds and mild temperatures. I have heard that because its so close to the Tararua Ranges that it gets a lot of bad weather.
I left Wellington for the more balmy climes of Auckland a few years back, but now that we are at the first house buying stage, we are out of the equation up here and we are looking at moving back down to Wellington to an area in the Wellington Region that is affordable but without so much of the 'weather'.
Many thanks!
Anton
Thanks a lot in advance

Sorry this doesn't answer your Featherston area question, but as you move up the coast from Welly towards the Kapiti Coast the weather improves - slightly warmer, less wind and rain. North of Porirua is nicer, and the further up you go the better it gets, but with a longer commute of course.

Hi Anton
We're in Featherston :D
Climate here is different again to Wellington. Very hot summers (can get up between 30 to 40 degs in a good summer, last year we were hitting 30 degs). Quite cold winters (can get down to 0 degs but it is rare), we've just come out of a very wet and cold winter hopefully not to be repeated next year. We do have Rocktober, which is notoriously bad winds in October, they usually only last for that month but on odd occasions the wind whips up.
Have to say the weather here this year has been unsettled but mainly it's blue skies and sun most days which we love. It's not as humid as Auckland and it's not as cold and windy as Wellington.
OH has commuted from here into CBD Wellington for the past year and a bit, he really enjoys it despite being an hour each way on the train, it's his wind down time before seeing the kids :)
You probably know this already but property prices here are on the increase and set to rise further. Compared to Greytown it's still very reasonable at present but I think it won't be long until it's on par with them and Martinborough as it's an easy commute to Wellington.
Hope this helps :)

Yah i am becoming sold on the idea....id much rather have a house with section 'over the hill' than a 2 bedroom unit in wellingtons outer cities - think it would appreciate in value more too!

Sorry did you say balmy Auckland. It's absolutly chucking it down here and has been for two days, and looks like a let up on sat. Not exacty what i was expecting.
Still first night at the running club tomorrow so the 13K should be slightly more bearable after the months lay off and continuios drinking. Hic.

Did the pack run tonight, decent run - not to hilly and it was cooler with no rain but towards the end the sun came out to remind me how hot the can be.
Have my eye on an olympic tri in Feb now, just hope the bike makes it over in one piece. Oh and I can find a cheap enough wet suit.
What about you? Found a club or tri event close by?

I'm going to join Wellington Marathon Clinic when they start back in January. No plans for a tri yet - I need to wait for our bikes to arrive in Feb and then get used to these hills! Maybe a Scorching Bay tri in April? Probably only sprint distance though - I need to get fit again before going olympic distance.
Good luck with your tri in Feb

Cheers Trigirl. Let me know how the marathon clinic goes.
Went out again today with the club. I think I can live with the pace so far - the torrential rain at the end was nice.
