just thought it a good idea to mention that we had our 3 children innoculated against the particular strain of meningitis found in NZ that is not done routinely in the U.K - and because we had it carried out before the end of December it was free, and the other two remaining jabs will be free too.

Under 5's are free for a while yet but the government has pulled funding for over 5's, so if you want the jabs , get in quick, our doc. told us this when we registered and booked us in next day.

The kids were all absoloutely fine with no side effects. We have also been advised to have the kids hep b jabs, these are free too, we are looking into it first as we have with all other jabs here or elsewhere, and will keep you posted

Just to add though - do some research! We had our children vaccinated when we arrived, since then there has been alot of media attention as it would appear the jabs were not tested adequately. In essence Kiwi kids have been used as an experimantal study! We are supposed to take our youngest for a booster and I really don't know what to do. If I'd had all the info about these jabs initially I'm not sure I would have said yes (not sure I'd have said no either)...... Very confusing :(

From the dr, they give out leaflet on it, so i already aware but i was prepared for it as men b do more risk on your child than jab as i have already seen what men can do your child...(someone i know nearly lost her daughter).

My kids had both men b and hep b together on same day, both doing fine since, they are due for their second just after new year.

Glad you also mentioned hepatitis b Nippa/Pippa. Our son had men b and hep b (1st of 3 jabs for each disease!) at the same time, as he saw a male doc with his dad. They felt that as he plays rugby, he needed the hep b. Meanwhile, I took the 2 younger girsl (15 and 9) to (my) female GP and they had no. 1/3 men b and a blood test to see if they needed hep b. Discovered yesterday they do, so will start that when they have their second men b in January!

Having been worked at hospital laboratories in UK, i am bit lost why on the earth this dr want to do blood test for hep b???????? maybe to check if they had it in Uk which is most unlikely as only people get hep b in UK are travellers and hospital workers  My 3rd round of hep b protection had now wore off as they only last 5 years before you need booster again, not sure what is NZ's policy on booster yet on children..need recheck on this.
