Hi,

When myself and my partner arrive in NZ it will be on a Visitors Visa (with changable return ticket ) We plan to gain a work offer/permit when we arrive.

I have all the various paperwork up together ready for immgration i.e, birth certs, references, quals, proof of our relationship (we're not married) - Will get medicals in NZ. (if anyone has a handing checklist of paperwork?)

Does anyone know weather we will be alright carrying this information through in our baggage? Or should I post ahead for when we arrive.

I was also thinking of buying a lap top in advance, would this be useful?

Any advice would be great and I hope I've posted this in the right place....

Thanks

Cathy

Hi Cathy,

I would recommend buying a laptop in advance; electronics tend to be more expensive in NZ compared to prices here in Canada. You can also have back up copies on your laptop and you can a laptop as an additional carry-on without charge.

However, somewhere I read that computers bought within 5 months of arrival are subject to sales tax. I don't think it will apply to you as you are arriving on a vistor's visa, but thought that I should mention it.

Mark.

Well, first of all, you'll need your passports, but you'll have those.

And I'm casting my mind back a few months now, but if you are intending to claim points for work experience, then it may be useful to take over your wage slips, to prove when you started and finished your jobs and your contracts, to prove what you did. However, if you have references then it might be okay, but I wouldn't risk not taking the slips or contracts, if you have them.

You'll also need police certificates (http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/general/formsandfees/formsandguides/policecertificate/uv/uk.htm), and they can take 40 days and cost £10 each. However, they are only valid for a year from the date of issue (well for the UK anyway).

If you decide to stay and get a job offer then you'll have the contract over there.

I think that about covers it, but if I think of anything else I'll re-post.

Hi,

Thanks for your replys, we intend to get work permit on the basis of a job offer. My Partner John is trainee Carpenter, he will have 3 references and also has an inland Revenue Tax Payment Voucher with employers name on.
We hope that would be enough to prove his work experience.

I am a travel agent, I will also have references and pay slips but if John is the lead applicant then I understand I can just get an Open Visa or VV depending who gets the job. I was suprised to see 'Senior Travel Consulant' on the Immediate Skills Shortage List!!! It could be me who's the lead applicate at the end of the day!!

So let me make sure...I need to apply for police check before I go? I think you are right because even if we get WP we would still apply for PR soon after so in which case. Therefore the Police check needs to be in place.

I wondered weather we should be taking all our documentation through the airport? if this is found then we could have problems explaining we are just visitors?

Hello The Hodges,

Thanks for your advice on the Police Certificates, do you think therefore we should get them before we head off.

Assuming we get Job Offer and apply for WP will they ask for Police Certs for a WP I know that you need them for permits 24 months or longer. Not sure what Immigration will give us in the way of WP? 1 yr or 2yrs? we will of course apply for PR 3months or so down the line so will definately need the certs for then but will have to ensure it doesn't expire, some advice has been not valid after 3 mths and others say 6 mths.

Can you clarify?

Thanks

Cathy

As stated on this (http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/general/formsandfees/formsandguides/policecertificate/uv/uk.htm) site [nz gov imm site]:

"If police certificates become a year old from date of issue before a decision is made on an application, visa and immigration officers may request further police certificates. Further police certificates may also be requested within the 12 month period if there is good reason to do so."

so thay should be good for a whole year from issue [up to 40 days TO issue :D ]

Thanks Neil,

So I will get Police certs before I go, if they are valid for 1 yr then this should be fine for both WP and PR later on.

Thanks for the advice,

Cathy

That is one year from date of issue and no decision made. On application the police cert must be no more than 6 months old. A medical must be no more than 3 months.
Check the NZIS website here: http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/general/formsandfees/formsandguides/policecertificate/uv/uk.htm

Which states - "Police certificates must be less than six months old at the time you lodge your residence application."

Hi Kerry,

Thanks again for clarifying this, Can you get the police certs easily enough whilst in NZ, I know Medicals are easy and cheaper.

Just trying to way up which is the best way round things. If I get police certs before we go then, we would have to apply for PR within 6 months of arriving.

If we have a go at getting PR which I would like to do asap, can you confirm how soon after getting WP can you apply for PR, and do we only get 1 chance, if we're unlucky the 1st time round. I'm just thinking WP was a way of us getting a foot in the door on the mininum quals/exp to make PR easier for us in the long run.

If it's likely we will get PR on the basis above then perhaps getting police certs in advance might be a good idea. Otherwise I suppose we can download form from wedsite fill out and send back to UK, takes about a 6 weeks to get back.

Sorry I'm rambling!!!
