Hi

My hubby has just been offered a job in Newtown, Wellington.

Can anyone offer any info on the area, schools, house prices for renting, etc ?

All greatly appreciated!!

Newtown is reasonably central, very multi-cultural and has a good range of shops and regular public transport. It appears to be undergoing a fair bit of regeneration - a fair bit of it is fairly run down, includes a sizeable number of student houses, but also has a lot of more upmarket building or renovation occuring.

Be aware that you are not by any means confined to living in that suburb - there are several others within walking distance and more with easy public transport reach.

I can't help you with schools, sorry.

I notice that you currently live in Wellington.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know much about the market in these areas, but the nearby suburbs that spring to mind are Beramphore, Kilbirnie, Mount Cook, Vogel Town, Haitaitai. The central city is a possibility, though chances are against you finding what you want affordably. Brooklyn and Moutn Victoria aren't too far and despite being a bit further out Island Bay is really nice and on a direct bus route.

If you're prepared for a bit of a commute, there's few places in Welllington City that I would rule out on grounds of distance, though.

If you plan to rely on public transport, www.metlink.co.nz will give you an idea of which places are directly linked.

If you want an idea where these are located, try http://wellington.govt.nz/maps/index.html , particularly the Wellington Suburbs section, but be aware that in a city as hilly as Wellington they only tell half the story.
