Hi, can anyone advise of how and if you are entitled to child benefit in NZ ?

We are hoping to come over end Feb, once all ok'd over here and wondered what the score was with this ?

We will be coming over on work permits, my hubby has a job offer in Wellington

You can only claim if you are a permenant resident and have been in the country for 12mths (or it may be 24- I can't be bothered to trawl through the IR website - but the info is there)
OR that you are a permenant resident who is the parent or guardian of a child who is a permenant resident -
ANY WAY what that means in PLAIN speak is that you can't claim anything on Work visas,
You CANT claim benifits of any help for yourselves until you have been a permenant resident for the specified length of time

BUT THAT YOU CAN claim child benifit (or what ever they call it)
if you are the parent or guardian of a Child who is a Permenant resident. no length of time stipulated.......

SO YOU CANT claim anything when you first get there, but when your OH gets a job, and has worked there for the specified length of time and he can then get Permenant Resident status (because you cant get it for just any job)

THEN you will be able to go on the website and fill in the claim forms (but you'll all need IRD numbers first)

if your child has permanent residency then you dont have to wait to claim family assistance you can do it as soon as you arrive. because of this the vast majority of people who come on PR don't have to wait at all.

but as you are coming on a work permit you won't be entitled to any benefits.
