Just wondered if any of you shopped around for shipping insurance or whether you just went with the removal firms company?
We have a quote for 1.8% of total value for TOTAL LOSS.
Is it worth shopping around for better quotes?
Any recommended companies?
we've not sent the forms off yet so its not too late!!!!
Cheers

The only one I know about is Letton Percival whose rate is 1.5%, but I'm not sure if thats for total loss and damage (it was a long time ago :D)

www.lettonpercival.co.uk (http://www.lettonpercival.co.uk)

All I can say about them is they were great, prompt and efficient with our claim. :nice1 I have no probs in recommending their service.

Is yours with the shippers? If so check which company they use, not hard as they all seem to use one or two. Check whether it includes damage to pc's and TV's or other electrical equipment that you might find expensive to replace here. There are some other threads on insurance with postings by Millimoo (I think :D)

And have a google too, there are some horror stories and forums out there that might be worth reading. Be prepared!

HTH, not long to go now eh? :raebanana

Well done on the job. Congratulations! :raebanana:raebanana

Hang on in there girl, it was always going to be harder for him anyway, even though he has made up his own mind. Failing that, threaten him with an 8 week journey to NZ in a carton, fully insured of course. ;)

Hi,

We went with Crown in the end. Nearly went for LP but they they wouldn't cover the plasma (would have had to ay extra premium) and they don't cover mould & mildew, mechanical & electrical derangement. A lot of people don't worry about that extent of cover and 9/10 it's OK, but I felt I couldn't take that risk.

As it turns out, the PC is unstable (motherboard loose etc) but there was no obvious damage, so wouldn't have been covered on standard insurance. Also the plasma screen was scratched. It works fine, just a scuff mark on the screen. So I'm very pleased I went with Crown and took the extra cover.

I'll let you know how the claim goes.

Hi,

Forgot to mention.... the other reason we decided not to go with LP was becasue the excess if you make a claim is 1% of the value of the goods you are shipping. So if you've got a container that you've valued at £50k and you need to make a claim, the excess will be £500. Crown charge £100.

So, I think the key point to think about are how much is your shipment worth and how much risk you are prepared to take. I think if the majority of your container is low value items, you're probably more concerned with total loss, so extra cover for M&M etc isn't worth it and also, are you likely to make a claim for an item which is worth paying the excess for.

Hope that makes sense.

Hi Milliemoo
Yes, we're just concerned with total loss. Two reasons - we packed boxes ourselves, and our goods are low value (but high cost replacement in event of total loss.) We have sole container, welded and surrounded by armed guards at every stage of the journey, with a radioactive shield and constant supervision by an unmarked satellite with nuclear warhead pointing straight at anyone who tries to open it on route in order to nick other half's tools. Well, that's what i've told him anyway!!!!!

Deborah, you know what i'm talking about i'm sure. Those damn tools nearly prevented us returning to NZ!!!!

Boxes now packed, we are living on bare essentials, and still 9 days to go until shippers arrive. But other half feeling much better, knowing his beloved tools are safe in their boxes and everything is accounted for. Whatever, i'm just glad we're going back!!!!!

Yep, great about the job - and it looks like so much fun i can't wait to start!!!!!
Much less stressful in our house now we are ahead of ourselves and ready to go! We even found time to go for an unnecessary cup of tea in the town centre today!
