Ok, in the scheme of things, it's not really that important, but I'm a bit upset about a package I sent to the UK for my nephews a month ago. I'd enclosed an All Blacks teddy bear for the younger one for his birthday, and also really nice NZ books for them both for Xmas. The girls had made a lovely card and written log letters for their granny who lives in a nursing home nearby, which were also in the packge. Basically a lot of thought had gone into it and I was imagining them receiving the package and how pleased they'd be etc (I'm sure you've all been there).
Anyway, as of today, it hasn't arrived. Other packages that I sent to the UK much later have arrived. Do you think I can assume it won't arrive now (it was sent on 1 Dec)? They live just outside St Albans, so it isn't the back of beyond. The package was worth about $70.
Assuming it isn't going to arrive, is there anything I can do? It was just sent ordinary air mail. Does this mean I have no comeback? Is it worth going to the post office I sent them from? I guess it could have gone missing anywhere en route...
Does this sort of thing happen often? Maybe sending parcels in the post isn't a very sensible thing to do. I'll have to think of something different next year!
Sorry for the whinge..

Kate, we have had it happen the other way round, a xmas pressie got lost last year coming here. But another thing that may have happened is that its gone by ship by mistake, we had a parcel sent to us at beginning of Jan last year, it turned up at the end of March!
to my knowledge we have not lost anything going to the UK (fingers crossed, as a parcel is on its way at the mo....)
Found this on the nz post website Q&A section. www.nzpost.co.nz (http://www.nzpost.co.nz/)
Compensation payments (including GST) for loss of, or damage to postal or courier items sent internationally (subject to the exclusions set out below) are limited to the following (plus reimbursement of postage if the item was lost):

Items valued at more than the standard compensation limit for a particular service must either be sent using a service with a higher standard compensation limit or, if it is available, you must purchase additional compensation cover.
For information about additional compensation cover please ask a New Zealand Post staff member or call our Customer Service Centre on 0800 501 501.
Some of it did not come out right in the copy & paste I did, but looks like you can claim for something at least, although its a shame about the sentimental stuff that was in it.

Luckily not had it happen to us, we've received and sent quite a few parcels. But the Christmas post has been really, really slow this year. Gifts sent from the UK to us here took just over 3 weeks and I'm still having cards delivered which were sent on 11 Dec.
So hopefully it is the post being really slow but (as JubJub has said) get in contact with NZ post and see if you can get some compensation.
I'd certainly be the same as you, very upset about it, especially with so much effort gone into it :(

Thanks, Sal. I'll see what I can do. Funnily enough re the going by land thing, that has just happened to me with a birthday card for dd whose birthday was at the end of October. The person who was sending it had stuck a UK 2nd class stamp on it and it went by land and arrived last week! I was really annoyed that that particular person had forgotten as well! I've let them off now.

Well, my sister posted parcel for my son's 2nd birthday from auckland to UK. He will be 4 in next july and his parcel still hasn't arrived to this date even i rang royal mail in UK about it...sorry kate.
On light side, you will laugh this (i don't find it funny yet!) my own father is in charge dealing this all mortagate, house sale (still not sold house), bank statements etc) post all our paperwork from october to november 2006, to our name firsts, then he put my sister's road address (auckland) before he put christchurch on it.......of course to this date, hasn't turn up because this address doesn't exist!
Did he put sender detail at the back just in case? NO! So we will never get it! even we rang wellington hq for help! Because of this, we got fine for delayed payment to bills.

The only thing I had was that I sent Jordons Sony E mobile phone back to the uk....Put on the customs label "Broken Mobile Phone".....It did arrive - but with a sticker anouncing that Customs had opened the parcel - as the package was suspected as being a bomb??? - small bomb - I just sent the phone wrapped in a jiffybag and it was about as big as a sausage!
Rachel said - I wonder if it would have arrived if the phone had actually worked!
Kat - PS the xmas gifts that I posted got there ok but the gift I sent in November actually took longer than the stuff I sent on the 14th Dec? - Go figure???

Hope your package arrives safely if tardy, K&CS; while in NZ I mailed a book to a friend in Taupo that I had found in Wellington. I mailed from a little store/restaurant about 5 hours North of Welly, put the correct address and our return (USA) address just in case...that was last March, I don't think it's gonna make it! :(

Sorry to hear about your lost package - we too are waiting for one package that has been sent - we did tell everyone NOT to post things as its so expensive - instead most people gave my dad the money, who has put it all into our uk account - we'll transfer a lump sum at some point in the future - and I shopped here using the equivalent amount - then sent pictures of all the stuff i had bought and how much it had cost back to the uk - 'a NZ ARGOS' then everyone decided what they wanted to say was from them and I wrapped it and stuck labels on - easier for them in the uk this year - but i didn't get any surprises !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o

Sounds like you'd make a great personal shopper, Marcia! :D
I sent a birthday parcel to mum about 3-4 years ago from UK to Nelson & its still not arrived. Since then I've sent everything "International Signed For" & kept all receipts. So far everything's arrived, but maybe it was just a one-off & things would have arrived anyway.

That is such a brilliant idea! When I came to the UK I figured I'd be broke for the first Christmas, so I told everyone "no presents" this year, and that sort of stuck. We just did pile of presents when I was home on hols, or they came to see me. None of us saw any point spending half the cost of the gifts on postage - and none of us were organised enough to send it off seamail back in September!
But this Christmas was really sweet - since they know I'm finally coming home, all the cards from the family had NZ currency in so we've got a wallet-ful of spending money to start us off :)
But back to postal delays - I sent four identical letters and cards to my Dad, two sisters and my bro on Dec 4. One reached Dunedin a week before Christmas, and the other 3 hadn't arrived by Christmas day! One to Alex and two to Gore... I know Southland's a bit more "relaxed" but it doesn't usually take the postie a week to get from Dunedin down lol

We've had things go missing from the UK to NZ but not the other way yet. Mostly family over there send cheques (££ to $$ we really appreciate it!!). The best one I ever personally saw was my sister sent a card with some money in from the US to NZ. It was correctly addressed. Finally got to Mum and Dad 6 months later with a stamp on it saying 'no such address in Malaysia'!! :nice1
It's really frustrating when you've put the thought and effort (not to mention money) into it and then it disappears. :no :wah

Last year one of my friend's parcels took 2 months to reach me from UK, so I'd wait a bit before thinking it is completely lost - I often post things at the same time & they arrive at completely different times in UK - even when I send 2 things to the same address on the same day!

Where did it go? BARBADOS!
Why? My sister forgot to put 'NEW ZEALAND' on my address, so the parcel went to Barbados, before offical in barbados open parcel to work out which other country got christchurch! before marked 'try new zealand' on the top of parcel, i am grateful for parcel turn up ok and my children pleased to see cards and presents from my sister and family. (She is now third member of my family have now send parcels to wrong address...what next!?)
Kate, did your parcel turn up ok?

A good story from the parcel department, we had a parcel posted on the 4th Jan, it arrived on the 9th Jan, I could not believe it! Thats the fastest ever time for an item posted from the UK, and the card that would have been posted at the same time, arrived a day later!

No word as yet about mine, although the man in the post office said that one year, a whole consignment to England went missing and turned up in March, so I haven't completely given up hope. I'm going to wait another couple of weeks, then phone the free phone number I've been given to chase it up!
Glad you got yours, Sophia!
Sal, I've had parcels arrive in 5 days before! There's no rhyme or reason, is there?

Yesterday I got a bundle of mail left in my mailbox for streets all over the town we live in.
All wrapped up with 2 elastic bands and attached to a book I had bought off Trade Me.
I took them all back to the Post Shop - the lady just shook her head in disbelief.
And the day before someone left me a whole head of broccoli in the mailbox - in a bag.
Still trying to work out who that was!

If only they knew the problems they caused in our house ..
We got ... erm, No cards from OH's family in London and approximately, ahem, 20 or so from my family in the North East. Combined with the fact that only my Mum and Dad phoned to wish us a Happy Christmas .. apparently OH's family couldn't get through on the phones (a common problem we now hear) meant that Boxing Day morning for us was a very sad time!
On the subject of post, I will now be sending everything registered!

Just an update - as of today, neither the parcel I sent to my brother on 1 December, nor the parcel sent to OH's brother a couple of weeks later have arrived! I sent 6 packages to the UK at christmas and only 4 of them arrived. Not a good result!!
Although the man in the post shop said not to give up hope, I think it's highly unlikely that either one will ever see the light of day. I am certainly not going to send parcels in the post anymore to the UK - at least not at Christmas!
Just be warned and don't assume your parcels will get there!

Well, my problem seems to be getting parcels FROM the UK !!
2 parcels were sent to us (by different people) The first one was sent on or around the 5th Jan and the second one a few days later - neither have arrived.
I contacted the sender of the first parcel (a company in the UK) and they sent a replacement parcel which I had to sign for and this one arrived only 5 days after they posted it !!
Odd eh??..........

best way to do it is to shop online at somewhere like IWOOT.co.uk, Amazon, argus or boots etc in the UK and get them topost and deliver. Saves a lot of hassle and I know that with Iwoot over a certain value is free postage so tend to send one lot to my sister and email her a list of whats whos so that she can give them out for me and another lot to my daughter and foster daughter with the same. I don't even have to go shopping, just sit down with a glass of wine one evening and browse through and order. easy.

One of my missing parcels has today turned up in our mailbox! It had been delivered on 2 Jan to my bil and the royal mail sticker on it says 'not called for'. What on earth does that mean??? I imagine it was the first day back after the xmas break and the postman was in a bad mood and didn't feel like doing anything with the parcel as it was too big to fit in the letter box so just decided to send it back! $27.60 down the drain!! What did you do about yours, Sal? Did you complain?? They can't treat people like that, the miserable b***ers!
I'm going to take it down the post office tomorrow and see what I can do!

'not called for' mean that your BIL has failed to collect his post from post office sorting office within selected timing, i think 2 weeks?, then the parcel return back to sender, mean you!
Did your BIL ever received a postcard stated he wasn't at home, he need to collect it from post office? If not, you should complain to royal mail.

I did not bother, told my friend what had happened, going to get her a pressie delivered for easter instead, via courier from a UK based company.
I kept one bit, neighbour got another bit, sweeties went to some nice kiddies that I know.... no point complaining really, neither side will take responsibility... We had one lost coming to us, and the sender only got 20quid compo from the Post office, despite it being 100 value and declared as such.. RM said cos they cant answer for what happened with it when it left UK.
Not tried to claim from NZ Post at all yet.

Hey - guess what ?
I had one of the parcels delivered today from the UK that I truly believed I would never see.
It was postmarked 15/1/07 and had a stamp on it saying 'Checked by NZ customs' but the parcel had not been opened or tampered with, so maybe they just x-rayed it eh? Who knows.... or come to think of it who cares? I don't because the parcel also contained a lovely little note from one of my best friends in the UK and that surprise alone was worth the wait.
Maybe I'll get the second parcel that was also posted from the UK in January too.
