We hope to move out to Wellington at end of Feb,
i ideally would like to move straight into our own rented house one we step off plane - is that wise ?? or would you suggest a motel for a few days ?
just dont want hassle/further upset of dragging a 4 1/2 year old around houses and would fel more secure securing a property over here before we get over there
anyone been in similar position ???
can anyone recommend any organisations that rent furnished accomodation out ??
any help greatly appreciated!

Hi Sharon
We ended up taking a bach for an extended period as this provided us with furnished accomodation (that would take our dog) whilst we looked round at areas to rent and buy. You end up paying a bit more but we struggled to find any furnished lets in Welly. You could take a look at www.bookabach.co.nz, www.holidayhouse.co.nz and www.rentabach.co.nz (they'll be more out there as well) - if you take them for 4 weeks+ we found the prices dropped quite a lot. We ended up staying in a great place in Kapiti which was about 50 yards from the beach, had 2 bedrooms and fully furnished for 3 months in all (took it for an initial month). Think we paid about 400 a week

I remember Sizzlingbadger recommending someone in Welly, because we contacted the agent he mentions before chickening out on renting without seeing. Anyway, I found his original post again, so here it is in case it's helpful..."We used Guardian First National, www.guardianfirstnational.co.nz (http://www.guardianfirstnational.co.nz/) and dealt with Jo de Jongh . She was the only agent prepared to help us find and rent somewhere unseen. She faxed the rental agreement through from NZ to the UK and we faxed it back signed. Turned up in NZ, went to see her and pay the deposit, fees and we were in the day after !"

i'd be very very wary of doing this. we have just been to see over 20 places to find a house we were happy to live in. some of the places looked and sounded fine in the advert but turned out to be student cesspits that had been rented out as 3 separate bedrooms for the past year. others look great but turn out to be completely inaccessible - a common problem in wellington. and an even bigger problem if you've got a small child to get in and out.

Thanks Trigirl for your reply - what part of Wellington have you settled in ?
The job my hubby has been offered is in Newtown - any ideas what it is like ?
I am seriously thinking about renting a bach, as previous reply to thread suggests, whilst we look around when we get there for suitable accomodation, even if it does mean taking the little one with us! If we are forkling out about 2500 $ to rent and it looks like you have to sign up with most of them for 12 monthes, I want to be 100% on it. ALso, as we are having to sell up everything here and take bare minimum with us, i have been looking at rental of things and this could work out expensive too as we will be looking at about 3-6 months on that i would guess.
Sure will all be worth it in end .....

Hi Sharon
We're in Brooklyn which is very close to Newtown. Newtown is a bit more studenty than most of Wellington. Some of the properties are quite rundown but some are lovely. Rent is a fair bit cheaper. There is a good and quite lively shopping area and Wellington Zoo is there (good for little ones) plus the hospital. Its not far to town and buses run very regularly. Houses up on the hill get great views - a friend of my mums has one and the view is stunning - especially at night.
Most places will allow you to negotiate the 12 months down to 6months and private landlords often go for a "periodic tenancy" where you only have to give 3 weeks notice. Thats what we've got. Renting furniture and stuff is very easy. Try DTR on Dixon St - its pretty cheap, they deliver everything to your door and just pick it up again when you're done with it - you don't have to specify how long that will be. We're renting a bed and sofa from them while we wait for our stuff to arrive.
As you say - it will all be alright in the end - in can be quite tough in the mean time though so keep the end in sight.....
