One of the job agencies has asked if my hubbie would consider contracting work or if he is set on a permanent job. What is IT contracting like in NZ? Are there lots of contracts and where is the best area for contracting?

Hi

My OH is IT contracting in Wellington but there is lots in Auckland too. Best is to say yes to both. Money is good and the tax system allows you to pay once a year in April and keep the money in a saving account in the meantime. Hopefully OH will hear if they are going to extend his contract soon. Plus he gets a NZ job on his CV,w which really helps here.

You need indeminity insurance and a lot of agencies offer this service (obviously they take it out of their hourly cut) . Plus an accountant to do your end of year. But you do not have to start up a company just be self employed so its quite cheap.

Good luck and hope he finds something soon.

I recommend Hudson in Auckland too. They have always got me great contracts. Also Robert Walters in Auckland have been good too.
There are loads of IT contracts about and the market really picks up at this time of year as companys look at starting new projects etc.

Overheard at the veterinarian's: "I had my cat neutered. He's still out all
night with the other cats, but now he's a consultant".

Sounds like what I told a client once when they asked me "Are you the one responsible for this project?" "I'm a consultant, I had all sense of responsibility surgically removed when I got my business cards and expense account" :p
(Still doing the consulting thing 15 years later!)
