Hello there!
Well i thought it will be nice to share a very good place with you guys that serves some of my favorite easy to make dishes from mexico. The owners are mexicans and their food is amazing :clap !!!!
The place is in Wellington and is only open from Fridays to Sundays and during vacations daily.
Oh yes! is in the Wellington Markets and it was on Wakefield
Street across of the museum in the food court.
Ok hope you can visit some time there if u want to experience a beautiful mexican meal...by the way it was so good it brought me back home!!
Ok, i did my job by telling you...the thing i should really do is open a mexican restaurant myself dont u think??? hahaha! well prob i will do but when i feel better.
Love u all, take care and God Bless,
Adriana

Mmmm, yes, I love that food court. The Chinese and Italian places are also good.
There's also good Mexican food (though I couldn't say how authentic, and pricier) at Flying Burritto Bros on Cuba St.

Well i can tell you the food in the flying burrito is not bad at all but is not the same....the food i talk about u can find it in many places in mexico is easy to make and is traditional, no extravanganses just easy to make and delicious!! I mean they even sell huaraches that means sandal because of the chape of the "kinda fat tortilla" they put some sauce that we call salsa and eggs on top of that it is served with refried beans and a side of grilled beef.
If you ever go to Mexico city you will find out what i am talking about....almost in every corner they have a stand where they sell tacos, quesadillas huaraches, etc the food i found in this little place in wellington...
The owners are so friendly and they help my family in law to understand better what was all about, so dont be afraid to ask....we even gave eachother our emails as i was so excited to find some other mexicans living here in NZ!!! The mom is Raquel and the daughter name is Christina

:( No! i will ask for the recipe to my dad if u want so u can prepare some ;)
They sell that i remember:
tacos dorados(u can choose the filling, potato, chicken, come with side of beans and rice) on top it has salad and sauce and sour cream)
huaraches(as i explained b4)
Huevos rancheros(eggs on top of a fried tortilla with red sauce on top, side of beans)
Huevos divorciados(eggs on top of a fried tortilla and with green and red sauces on top, side of beens)
fajitas
Tacos de cochinita Pibil
Enchiladas verdes and rojas (green and red enchiladas)
Quesadilla(fat tortilla and cut in the middle with a filling u choose dont remember which they offer sorry topped with salad, sauce and sour cream)
Sorry, i dont remember but i am sure they have other 3 choices or so.
Ok see ya!

I would LOVE your Dad's recipe! I bought a few Mexican food cookbooks in anticipation of our move, but a family recipe beats a book any day! :D Thanks again.

Wow thanks for the recommendation - Mexican food is something we love & we've not ventured to Flying Burrito Brothers since 2 different friends of ours were sick after eating there...
I think there's definitely a market for Mexican food we'd certainly come along if you opened a restaurant :)

Great news for us too! We have slim pickins here in NYC for good authentic Mexican food. Luckily we have one tiny place by us but still can't get certain dishes we were able to get back in Southern California.
Ana - what cookbooks do you have?

I have: The Everything Mexican Cookbook by Margaret Kaeter, and The Book of Mexican Foods by Christine Barrett. I was also given a Sunset Mexican cookbook, but it seems kinda "Americanized". I bought the first two because they show you how to build the sauces, and to make corn and flour tortillas, and substitutions for regionally difficult items. (eg: corn meal for masa harina)

Any thoughts on Rick Bayless?
My first thought was "who"? :o . I googled, though, and will look for his show! :nice1 .

No, we have so many great restaurants in Escondido, I've not gone much further for yummy food, but we have a lot of friends in that direction, maybe we'll do a meet-up there at your recommendation!

I will try to get in contact with my dad in the next few days as he s always busy in the restaurant, but i definately can help u out in some things as i learned from him, and my 2 grandmas and of course my mum.
There are some typical easy to make meals that are very popular in the mexican home such as picadillo(a mince meal with tomato base)
oh!! i should not give up all of them becuase next stop u r the ones that will open de restaurant and not me :laugh

I confess that that little food court scared me, but I'll have to try the Mexican fare there as soon as possible. Their offerings did strike me as Mexican street food, as opposed to the Cal/Mex stuff we enjoyed in socal, so I'm curious to try them.

Hi Adriana,
We are going to arrive in NZ mid-August. Exactly where we're not sure just yet. It's going to be either Auckland or Wellington, depending on where Greg gets a job. If it's Wellington we'd love to met up with you guys for cafe con leche, tacos dorados, anything!

Well i wish you and your hubby the best of luck finding a home and a job that suits him.
Well if u like hot chocolate my father brought me the traditional mexican chocolate so i can surely make it for you guys and some home made cheese cake(not so mexican) ok?
Make sure you let us know when u r coming and where, to see if u need some help.
Another good thing to do is to say what ur hubby is looking for in a job, i am sure people here can look up in their companies to see if there is an opening and help in a way or another.
Ok emily c ya later,
Adriana

Sort-of on topic; is there somewhere to get Mexican hot sauce? Something like Tapatio, cholula, or el yucateco's sauces? I haven't looked too hard yet but all I've seen is El Paso salsas.
Thanks to the forumites who suggested the Mexicano factory for corn tortillas - the nice couple there sold us some along with cans of jalapenos and chipotles (no, buying tortillas was not on our list of 'first things we must do in New Zealand', but since we were going up to the Hutts anyway we had an excuse. :laugh) For what it's worth, they suggested the Mexican Cafe in Newtown across from the hospital - don't know if anyone's tried that one?

Hi Jen there is a webpage where u can find many things like the hot sauce, achiote, cajeta, etc and is a reasonable price the down side is u need to at least buy 25dlls the website is www.mexifoods.co.nz
About the mexican cafe....is a chain that started in Auckland, i particularly dont really like it, i like that is all full of mexican decoration but that is it. But you should give it a try i mean prob is different flavor from Auckland, it all depends of "EL SAZON" (the individual spicing-flavor) that the cheff puts in the platters.
Can you tell me where did u find the Mexicano factory?? i would really appreciate you can tell me...thanks!

They're in Lower Hutt on Wingate. It's a corn tortilla and corn chip factory - they don't normally sell retail but we called ahead and they said if we came up there we could buy corn tortillas $5/20 tortillas. They also had flour tortillas but we'd seen them in the grocery so didn't get any. Their contact info is here: http://www.ubd.co.nz/company-profiles/78438/default.aspx
