Hi All,
We've finally fixed a semi-solid date to make the move of the 6th April this year.....and yes, I am bouncing all over the place & making a mess of my underwear in equal measures.
My question is this: Is there a tax "bonus" to OH & I to leave before the end of the UK tax year? For instance, would we be able to reclaim the PAYE tax that has been deducted in FY0607?
I'm sure that dear Gordon wouldn't be this nice to those us that are legging it. :exit

And here I am because A WEEK FROM LEAVING they send me a "request for information" - for the last THREE YEARS :no
they even expect ME to tell them each tax office that has dealt with my deductions in that time :o [frantic scratching in various {previously sealed and ready} boxes] *sigh*
Really strange considering I worked for the local council [as a teacher] for the entire time in question!!!
Just what I need to lower my stress levels!

I don't know if there is a bonus as such, but once we were here we both wrote to our respective tax offices advising them of our departure (bit late I know, but hey ho).
I got a rebate in 2 lumps totalling about 600 quid for the past tax year and OH had a tidy sum too. They paid it directly into my UK bank account. It's the 1st rebate I've had since I was 18, I got 99 pounds then and bought my 1st car! :D
They didn't ask me for any proof or to contact any other office though. Sorry not much help, but tell them anyway, you never know?

Maybe I'll skip dinner now. :laugh

I think this only applies if you are near a tax threshold - say just over the higher rate tax limit.
If you are - then the tax you pay through the year is worked out on the basis that you earn over that tax limit.
If you left a bit earlier than the end of the tax year (or simply stopped working before then) then, because you didnt actually go into the next tax bracket - you would get a refund.
What you dont get is a bonus. For anything :no
And you cannot claim tax back that is paid on income you actually earned.
As far as i know anyway. If thats not clear (im a bit "wooly" myself about all this) - id really advise just ringing the tax office to make sure. Not a bad idea to do that anyway to be honest.
However - it well worth making sure you cancel all your bills and direct debits properly because you may get considerale refunds from that.
