My wife and I will arrive in NZ on Jan 18.

We are looking for accommodations near Victoria University in Wellington (Kelburn Campus).

We see several that would fit our needs, but we are unclear about the "state" or good/bad environment with regards to the different sections of Wellington.

We are considering places to rent in Te Aro, Kelburn, Wellington Central, Brooklyn, Karori, and anything else that is semi-close to Kelburn Campus (We won't have a car).

Do we need to avoid any of these places? Any warnings would be much appreciated!!

Thanks guys!

Those are amongst the main areas students live in, and all worth trying. Within all of them you get a huge disparity of housing, from really scummy flats to completely unaffordable ones along with reasonable housing.

I'd think twice about Brooklyn, not because it's a bad neighbourhood but because the public transport links to uni aren't too good (they're certainly useable, just think about whether changing buses or walking part of the way is a problem). And I'd add northland to the list (between Karori and Kelburn).
