We've recently had cause to visit a doctor in Palmerston North and I thought that $50 was a bit steep - so it got me thinking, maybe that's an average cost, I'd be really interested to hear what other's pay. (hubby is recovering from his tonsilitis BTW!)

Hope he's better soon - tonsilitis is pretty nasty. As far as I'm aware, $50 is pretty standard. That's what we pay for adults. We pay $20 for the kids and for under 5s, it's free.

Hope he is recovering, tell him to drink lots of liquid! ;)

The only time I've been mine was on the ACC after I fell. It was $29 and prescription's were $6.

Dawn,

I paid $55 for my 15 minute visit the other day (North Shore, Auckland), but you might find this link useful, as it lists lots of fees:

Cheers

Tia

PS I suffered with tonsilitis/throat & ear infections a lot as an adult and finally had my tonsils taken out - never had a problem since!

He's recovering well, but on his second set of antibiotics. Smiler, $6 is a good price for a prescription, ours was $15! We're hoping that this bout of tonsilitis doesn't recur otherwise he will have to have them out, plus it's costing a fortune in docotors visits and prescriptions.

I wouldn't want to be seriously ill here, not unless I had insurance, which we're now considering.

It certainly makes you think twice about going doesn't it?

Our surgery has just upped its rate to $60.
We have medical insurance for "major" stuff only - so we are covered for ops and scans and stuff but not GP visits as we are generally a reasonably healthy lot.
But it is re-assuring to have for peace of mind - should we need something done quickly.

i pay less than 30, but only just! lol...i pay 29 dollars and the maximum is about 35 i think they said. im 22 though and my surgery has different price brackets depending on your age. which is cool. and for all people under 25 theres free sexual health checks and "accessories" hehe(i know you can go to family planning etc but its not often that a private surgery offers that i reckon!)

With community service card (CSC), my OH paid $30.
Before christmas, both children struck down with chest and ear infections at same times, antibioitic and parmol(?) were given. Cost? free for dr and treatments because they all under 6.
*touch the wood* i have not yet been to dr, but i know i will be $30 with my CSC, also prescriptions will be discount.

we 'joined' a local medical centre/surgery and the cost once joined is $27. otherwise its $60. might be worth anyone out there phoning around and asking about similar schemes.

Seems as some folks are being ripped off as we pay between $15-20 for each visit no matter how long you are in there for. Currently am off work at the mo with a disc problem and i am visiting the quack every week. The cost doesn't change at all.

Theres a surgery round the corner to us that charges $15 per visit but you can't join there as their list is full until they can recruit another doctor.

There was something in the news a while back about trying to get Drs. fees down but I can't remember the ins and outs of it.
