Peter (age nearly 3) had his first menB shot on Wednesday and seems to be reacting to it. He's been a bit hot the past few days on and off and complaining that his tummy hurts, and today he suddenly started vomiting. We were in the car on our way out of town for the weekend, turned around and came home and put him to bed (after a big drink of water and a dose of infant Tylenol). He's asleep now and hopefully will feel better after a nap.
This is the sickest he's ever been (which makes me grateful for how healthy he usually is) but the literature lists nausea and a slight fever as possible reactions, so I'm not too worried. Just wondering if anyone else's kids have reacted to it? And if so, how were the 2nd and 3rd shots?
thanks
Avril

Hi Avril, sorry to hear Peter reacted quite badly to it. As you say, he has experienced "typical" reactions, rather than anything unusual or untoward, but still noy very nice for him or you :no
Our doctor suggested that as ours are older (15, 10 and 9), they would be less likely to suffer the reaction, which proved the case on jab 1. They all had slight soreness on their arms and couldn't raise theier arms high without feeling some pain, but it only seemed to last a couple of days. We are awaiting re-calls for jab 2 soon, so fingers crossed!
Sorry I can't help with your question, someone is bound to be able to. Hope he feels better soon,
Gil

My three suffered with really sore arms after the first two jabs ,My youngest was sick ,but I think that was just shock and being scared of having the jab .
They needed a day off school after their second jab ,so I cleverly arranged the third to be on a friday ;)
Hope your little boy is ok now.

Luckily my two didn't react. Although Gem (5) complained of a sore arm. Hope Peter feels better after his nap.

thanks everyone. He slept all afternoon, he's more cheerful now but still very pale and a bit hot, and uncharacteristically quiet (just lying on the sofa with a blankie watching a DVD). Not looking forward to the other 2 shots... :(

My son (turns 4 in March) completed his course of shots two months ago, apart from sore arms (he got the Hep B as well) he was fine. And oh yeah, a sore throat from al the screaming he did.... :o
Hope Peter will feel better soon!

hi
My three sons, 13, 8 and 2 had their first jabs just before christmas, my middle son, was sick and hot with tummy pain and really not very well 2 days after the jab, he was ill for 2 days - i did not think it was a reaction at the time because my youngest son had had the same (but more severe 1 weeks previously) and so i belived it was this bug that my 8 yrl old had now picked up - i could be wrong.
Give Peter plenty to drink, it is easy to forget that little ones get dehydrated very quickly ( no patronising meant) i am sure he will bounce back quickly. I think the reaction would have been more immediate in peter and my son Max if it were the jab, and that they both have/had a tummy bug

Oregonkiwi, sorry to hear about Peter, hope he recovers soon. One thing I've found is that the Nurofen for children works better for my boys than Pamol and if necessary they can be used at the same time. So I tend to give them that just before the jabs.
Mine also had a sore arm, I got a cold, wet flannel and wrapped it around the sore bit

I think we must have had a really good nurse in the UK as none of my boys cried. But they have all cried here and the youngest had his 5 month jabs and there was quite a bit of blood - poor thing!

My friend's 3 year old reacted extremely badly to it. After a couple of days' vomiting, they took him to the dr, who told them to take him to hospital 'immediately - don't wait for an ambulance'. They gave him a lumbur puncture and he was deteriorating rapidly - they were extremely concerned to say the least. He suddenly picked up after being offered some icecream of all things, and left hospital a few hours later. One of my girls wasn't well at all although my baby was fine. They had very sore arms too.
Since watching that documentary about the injection a few months ago, I'm not sure I would have let them have the injection with hindsight. I am very pro jabs (Alex has just had his MMR), but it does seem that NZ kids were used as guinea pigs for this jab and there have been some very unpleasant long term side effects.
