Hi

We have decided to go over to NZ on visitor visa's as this will be much quicker and less costly for us at moment. I understand a few people have done this from reading some of the threads.

Any ideas when we get there how long it will take to get a work permit for my hubby ? He has a job offer already but as funds are so very tight at moment,(husband lost his job and was unemployed for three months, thus taking all our savings), the only way we can get over there by March (when reqd) is to go this way and pay the fees for working permit when we get there.

I know it will be dearer but seems the only way we can get there for the deadline given by his prospective boss and only way we can 'live the dream and chance of a lifetime'.

Any advice ??

Also, any ideas what i could do then for me and little one for extending our stay there ? what are our options ?

HELP!!!

i can't give any definite help on timescales - although my understanding is that they are issued very quickly.

once your husband has a work visa you will be entitled to an open work visa and your child to a student visa.

Think the time frame is a little quicker than the UK if you are doing it from here. Wife is in the process of becoming principal applicant on a new visa for us, but has been held up due to her application having to go to the medical board. Remember though they will still do a labour market check before issuing one, and they say the stipulated time for that is 6 weeks, but it can become a little shorter time span. Also to do it from here is cheaper.

Hi, what is a labour market check ? sorry, not heard of that.
Do you mean that it may take 6 weeks to get a working visa once we are out there ??

Sharon. The labour market check is something which they do just to make sure there aren't any locals who can do the job before they issue the visa. Its nothing to worry about really. They say it takes 6 weeks to complete, but it can be a shorter limit. I'm afraid you have to dance to their tune for a short while.

I understand companies have to do the Labour Market check before offering job to say , my OH!, but how often does this result in NOT offering the job to someone well quliafied to do the job even if from Uk, eg my OH! Do they really push to find someone local or it is a formality? If we're looking good on paper, tick all the right boxes, are they likely to offer it to us? Unanswerable quetion I know but if Co.'s have to do teh Lab Check, surely they must fill some jobs from 'inside'?

Firstly .. is the job on the shortage list? If so then the employer does not have to try and find a NZ national (unless I am completely wrong!)

Secondly .. if the job is not 'skilled' then the employer will have confirm how they have tried to employ a NZ national for the post AND PROVIDE PROOF such as copies of advertisements, details of interviews that have taken place etc etc. If you want to know what hoops the company has to jump through, get a work permit form and read the bits the employer has to fill in. It is not a case of .. we looked, this fella was the best, take our word for it.

I think the point I'm trying to make is - obviously immigration cannot stop a company offering your OH a job........ but they can prevent him from taking it up by not issuing a permit. Looking at it from the other side .. the employer may not really search for a local first.. they could assume that your husband has an open permit already for example and would have no problems taking up the offer.

Re: time scales .. I was quoted 2-4 weeks (Auckland) but I know of others on this forum who have had them issued the same day (definitely not Auckland!).

Good luck,
Dawn
