Hello, all.

I'm trying to narrow down the list of places my family and I plan to visit when we get to NZ this year (around Sept.) in search of a place to settle.

So far we have been able to establish lists based on various sets of criteria, such as locations that interest us because of weather (warmer, less rainy) and intellectual stimulation (university, art and music) to name a few.

I am now taking our much narrowed-down list of destinations and trying to figure out what the cost of living vs. income is by region.

Does anyone know of an online resource to search median household income or such (and if so, is this a good place to start?) I can easily find real estate sites to check home values.

Somewhere, for example, I read a few months ago that Tauranga has the lowest income compared to other NZ regions. I don't know if that is true, and I'd like to verify on an official site.

Thanks in advance!

Christine

Christine,
Check out Stats NZ Regional income tables (http://xtabs.stats.govt.nz/eng/TableViewer/Wdsview/dispviewp.asp?ReportName=Incomes/Household%20income%20by%20region) (Click on the Total Regions link to show regional detail). You can find a lot of good data on their site; the top level is www.stats.govt.nz (http://www.stats.govt.nz) It can be a bit hard to ferret out the exact info you want because there is so much there, but be patient and you can find almost anything numerical you can imagine.

CjChris, hope you found what you needed; we stayed with friends in Tauranga recently and they told us it is known as "Ten Dollar Tauranga" precisely because the wages are low compared to othrer regions...:(
