I've noticed that almost every store seems to be having a summer sale right now & we were told that this is the time of year to buy things. I was just wondering if that's true - is this the best time of year to "stock up" on clothes, appliances, etc.? How long do the summer sales last? Is there another time of year that's a "sale season"?
I'll appreciate any advice; we're moving into our new apartment Thursday and for now I think we need several lamps, maybe a space heater, and a microwave. That's assuming nothing we shipped got broken - much to our surprise our container got here 2 weeks early so we'll find out how that went on Thursday, too. Fingers crossed!!

I'm no great shopper, but see the adverts, so know that Sales are on nearly every other week here :) Especially Briscoes, who have one on every weekend and I really wonder if anyone ever pays the retail price there?
On larger whiteware, you can always negotiate on the price when they don't have a sale on - they expect it in most shops.

I've stocked up on stuff like decent quality bed linen and also bought a summer quilt. I usually check the prices before the sales, so that I know it's been sold at the RRP before. Stuff like Sheridan Linen etc. I always did this in the Uk at sale time too. :D I like a bargain, me.
I hate it when they fill the racks with 1998's fashions because they didn't sell then and then expect them to sell in a sale now. :no
I've also been looking at eyewear in the sales. Glasses are very expensive in NZ and I feel a lot better buying them at half price.
Does anyone ever buy anything in Briscoes outside of their 'sale'?

Whenever there is a public holiday there is a sale. I moved on Auckland weekend last year, which was followed by Waitangi Day, and I got bargains galore in all the sales going on.
I've never been to Briscoes - the woman on the ads annoys me too much!

Thanks - I won't worry too much about missing the sales right now since it sounds like they'll be more later on! I did buy a duvet at Briscoes marked 40% off, which I guess makes it the regular price for them :laugh

As everyone says - sales pretty much on all year. K-Mart, Briscoes, Arbuckles & a few others we never pay full-price for anything - we wait until whatever we want is on 40%-50% off... (which is usually only a week or 2!!)
Good sales to look out for are the Warehouse Toy sale which is once a year in winter (great time to buy Xmas pressies!!). Super Cheap Auto (a shop for car bits & pieces) when they offer money off everything in the store - only do this once a year or so & some of the more expensive clothes shops that only have 2 sales a year (as well as Kirkaldies sale which has huge discounts but the prices are pretty steep to start with).
Its a bit lethal all these sales if you're as shopaholic!!

You are kidding right? I mean do you go to larger whiteware shops and start "bargaining" like you do in the Flea markets here? Wait, sometimes it doesn't even work in flea markets in Canada.

Oh yes - never pay full price for any large whiteware item in any electrical store (even bargain in the sales - we just did & got a fantastic deal saving a few hundred dollars off an already discounted price - helped that we'd seen the same product in Australia for $2000 cheaper in their own shop!!).
We've got the best bargaining from Harvey Norman - we always laugh when we leave since they say 'we're making a loss on that' every time we negotiate a deal... as the Tui advert says 'yeah right!!'
