We're flying via Hong Kong and have only 20kg pp. Has anyone managed to get extra allowance with air NZ without having to pay the excess?
We're flying out on 2nd Feb and just found out that we don't need to pay the extra £20 airport tax each. That could buy us an additional 5 kg's !!!
With everything we've gone through these past couple of years, I think right now is one of the most stressful times as DD approaches !!

If you fly via LA (or even set a return via LA) you get 2x22kgs, so it might me worth you paying the 50 quid to change your ticket! I set up a 'dummy' return via LA and flew out via HK - I may not use my return leg so it didn't matter which way it was routed anyway.
I was told something crazy like 50 pounds per extra kilo in excess baggage so it was well worth it for me.

Hi Keith and Debbie,
We flew via LAX simply because of the higher baggage allownace (2 x 23 k bags per person). Don't know about HK, but just wnated to say keep going! You're so nearly here and it will be lovely to hear from you once you arrive (btw, it stays mad for the first couple of months!)

Thanks for your replies.
I'd rather go via Hong Kong, I've heard it can be manic going via LA with checking out and then back in again, besides, I've never seen any part of Hong Kong, so Keith will have to travel light while I bring all my shoes !!!
See you soon !!! :raebanana

Just had a word with Singapore, we can have 35k per person. Didn't Air NZ lower their allowance recently?
And another one, why do people going to Oz get a higher baggage allowance? Strikes me as odd that one... guess there is a reason for it though.

wonder if I can have the cats luggage allowance, after all her ticket is costing more than mine :laugh

We were allowed 35kg from L.A. for each bag in March 2005, but it was with air tahiti. I do believe if you explain u r emigrating to NZ they will let u bring more weight with you.
Hope u have some luck and they let u pass more, u should definately call the airline and ask them!
Best of Luck,

Sorry Pip, got enough junk of my own to take! :laugh
If you explain you are emigrating as the others have said, they do offer increased baggage.
Good luck.

As we are flying Air NZ via Los angeles I decided to recheck the baggage information and it seems to have changed since the last time I looked
www.airnewzealand.co.uk/travelinfo/baggageinformation/check_in_baggage.htm
If this is right it now means we will have to take two suitcases each as according to this the maximum allowed in each case is 23Kg.When friends of ours came over in Sept 08, the allowance was 35 kg per case. This is one hell of a drop.Probably a health and safety thing
Does anyone know any different

Now I am really confused :(
We fly Air NZ on the 8th via LA, just an hour and a half stop for refuelling. Only flight left when I booked. :wah
The way I read this allowance thing, and have phoned Air NZ is;
23 kg per person total. Divided between NO more than two pieces of luggage.
No one case to exceed 32 kg, for H&S reasons.
Children have same allowance if seat taken and paid for.
Collective weight allowance allowed, so we have 4 x 23 kgs in total.
No allowance for migrants.
Shippers in on Wednesday, so not much time to re pack, or retrieve , :uhoh therefore answers on a postcard not applicable, but forum posts greatfully received.

That was what applied to us on Nov 18 2006 dawnshaun, plus of course one correctly-sized piece of hand luggage each.

If flying via LA, every person is entitled to the 23kgs per piece allowance, even infants ;) The allowance includes baby items like car seats/strollers as well.
They decreased baggage allowances last March due to fuel prices going up :roll

I understand the baggage allowance from London to Auk with Air New Zealand but are you then stung on the internal fligt down to Christchurch?
My worry is that we will be charged excess for this part of the journey.

If the international itinerary on your eticket shows London-LA-Auckland-Christchurch the international baggage allowance will apply to your domestic flight (23kgs x 2).
To be honest with you, chances are that even if your Auck to Christchurch flight is booked separately (as part of your international journey), you should still get the big baggage allowance provided you show the check in agent in London that you have ongoing travel. It might be a bit more of a problem if you're stopping in Auck for a few days, then going down South and your domestic journey is booked separately :uhoh
Hope this isn't too confusing to understand :o

Has this last year and it was no problem (and the limit then was 60kg!). As long as at least one leg of your journey is via LA with Air NZ then ALL legs are 46kg (2 x 23kg) per passenger, even if you're going back via HK (make sure you book them together though - maybe you can have them added to the itinerary?). Worth baring in mind of you're just flying out via HK from London that you're allowed another 10kg in sports equipment in addition to the 20kg allowance on that route.

Hi,
Just wondering if anybody has travelled through LA recently. I am booked to travel from London Heathrow to Auckland via LA in the coming weeks. From my flight ticket information I have a 2 hour refuelling stop and will be continuing onward on the same plane. Do I have to remove all my families baggage and recheck it in and do we have to go through the US immigration process, which sounds like a nightmare. I also noticed that on the information Air NZ sent me that it was recommended to allow 3 1/2 hrs for flights via LA, however, they have only allowed me 2 hrs. Just wondering if anybody else has received the same information. Just a bit concerned as have a young toddler and nervous partner flying with me.
Cheers

I had friends travel through LA a couple of months ago with a young child. those with youngsters get priority, especially if your child is being sick at the time. Apparently the queue opened up for them!!

Traveled via LA in June. I take it you're on NZ 1 all the way through? If so you're de-planed and put straight through immigration desk right next to the gate into a transit area. Free drinks and snacks are provided, with a couple of Televisions. It's nowhere near as bad as you'd think - queues are quite fast and this time they were offering drinks down the queue. Families with young children are prioritised to the front.
You no longer have to check in baggage again - just take off all your cabin luggage so they can clean the aircraft.
The 3 1/2 hour rule I guess is for those changing flights etc.

Hi Gilly,
I am sure that someone will have done this route and can give you a definative answer, however - we flew a few years ago via Bangkok and had a 2 hour refuelling stop, both ways - we were allowed if we chose to just clear customs and wander around the airport (which we did on the way out) or stay in the plane if we wanted to ( we did on the way back) so it could be like that for you.

Many Thanks, I did think we would be OK but didn't want to presume. I do think the 3 1/2 hour rule is for people changing operators.
I must admit I was getting a bit worried after all the negative things I had heard about immigration at LA.
Once again many thanks for taking the time to reply.

Are you sure that the 3 1/2 hours is not related to the check-in time in the UK as you need to allow plenty of time for check-ins for any flight to the US?
If you are still unsure then why don't you phone AirNZ (0800 028 4149) and ask (its free :) )

My parents flew from UK to AKL via LA and stay in AKL for 48hour before flew down to CHCH with 40kg each without extra charges:nice1 .. Just let the ANZ know about you coming and make sure you get confirm letter or email that you have been cover for internal flight with 40kgs each because you are coming from oveseas. It was my sister who spoken to ANZ on behalf of my parents.

Confused again must be all the coffee! i was under the impression that if you flew via LAX that the baggage allowance was significantly more i.e. 40kgs but from this thread there seems to be conflicting experiences. We had plannned to go this route mainly for the increased allowance to be honest and if no benefit luggage wise may conside other more child friendly (I live in hope) options. Lack of clarity or no detail on specific airline websites too? Anyone had a recent trip?
Thanks

My parents flew with Air NZ via LAX in April 2007, that is more up to date and they allow to have 40kg each even they are not "emigratig" they were just visiting us in CHCH and my sister in AKL.....(NB the very first questions of this thread is from jan 2007)
However I flew with emirates and allow 40kg each person if you ARE emigrating with visa to show to airline.

I am flying out of AKL tonight on Air NZ to LA, then to Canada , then to Europe.
This is what my ticket says:
Checked baggage allowance:
Passengers are allowed the following baggage, Any piece of baggage that weighs in excess of 32 kgs will not be accepted for carriage.
Travel to or from the USA, Canada or between NZ and the UK via North America: All classess 2 pieces of luggage per person --each piece cannot exceed 23 kgs in weight. Business class, each piece cannot exceed 32 kgs in weight.
So I make that to be 46 kgs per person, but for heaven sakes do not go over 32 kgs in one bag. They are not talking about charging extra, they are saying they will refuse it. (although I think they may be stating their harshest decision, and perhaps there is a bit of leniency there?

No bag can be over 32kgs due to Health and Safety reasons. Air NZ has a very strict policy for their baggage handlers as they are the ones most at risk of back injury.

Here's the webpage details for Air NZ baggage allowance travelling from the UK
http://www.airnz.co.uk/travelinfo/baggageinformation/check_in_baggage.htm
Anything you get over that (without paying excess luggage) will be at the discretion of the check in agent when at the airport. Bear in mind that if you do go via Hong Kong you will only get 20kgs per person, compared to 46 via LA ;)

Just to summarise for those that may be getting confused!
Please note this refers to Air NZ only.
Via LA -
2 x 23kg bags per person (down from 2x30kg up to last year)
Maximum permissible weight for any one bag is 32kg, but I'd keep it to 2x23kg to avoid any problems.
You DO NOT have to recover and check your baggage back in at LA any more
The same allowance will cover ALL sectors of your itinerary.
Via HK-
1 x 20kg per person
An additonal 10kg per person if you are carrying sports equipment, eg skis
