Been asking loads of questions based on myself and partner coming to NZ on tourist visa to get WP/PR given out our names, date we fly in to AKL etc. Read a few reports on other sites that mention sometimes NZ airport customs and immigration read through these websites!!!! oh my god. Please someone tell me I'm just getting overly paranoid. Not that were doing anything illegal, just on a reccy trip. Decided to send paperwork that we'll need ahead to collect when we get there.
Thanks
Cathy

Hello....I say, DON'T WORRY. I cannot imagine they would have the time nor the inclination to bother with something like this.
If they are like me, once I've read something and moved on, I forget names, personal info, etc. So, unless they are getting paid to sit there and take notes, I truly think the folks on the other forum who were writing abuot it are the ones paranoid!!
Relax ;)

Thanks CjChris,
Your the first person to reply to this thread in days....thought everyone was ignoring me or thought I was being a paranoid freak...which in truth I was I suppose.
I have since chilled out and feel the same as you, I mean who am I anyway!
They won't be bothered with people like us.
What's your view travelling through with all your paperwork ready to apply for WP? Would this cause suspicion

Hi Cathy -
I believe we are in a similar situation - we don't have enough points without a job offer, and we're just going to go for interviews and hope for the best...
We're not taking all our documents, since they won't all be ready by the time we fly, so my wife's dad will send it over to us.
Got a little paranoid myself about some issues, but trying to keep optimistic. It will be a very long flight back home if we're refused entry..

Hey, I'm giving this a bump to see if someone with firsthand knowledge can give you some pointers. I feel certain I read somewhere on here recently about others who had their paperwork sent by post once they were there and had established a temporary address. They seemed very concerned (note: concerned, not paranoid :laugh ) that too many documents would cause suspicion. I agree that it is a little risky.
So, would whoever posted about this topic previously please step forward ;)

Hi, I'm a member of the paranoid gang too, and when we came we forwarded our documents by courier to a friend we'd met this forum! I didn't want to have to be pulled over to be asked why I'm on holiday and yet bringing all that paperwork.
There is a show here called Border Patrol and it's one of those documentary/fly on the wall shows and it follows immigration officers. They showed a Brit guy being pulled to one side and asked about why he had all his papers etc with him - he got through but was told not to work until he had the right visas etc.
I spoke with an immigration agent about exactly this topic and there is nothing to say you can't come here on holiday and look for jobs, but any intention to not return to the UK when visitors visas expire needs to be ascertained.
The lady who we travelled over with from the UK when we arrived was given a bit of a grilling - I wouldn't have liked it :no
BUT, I do know of people who have come on visitors visas yet had already arranged for all their gear to be containerised etc, I couldn't have done that. We still had a home in the UK to return to, albeit tenanted, and bank accounts etc so we had somewhere to go if we didn't succeed in getting work or didn't think NZ was for us. We were even already in immigrations system as we'd recently (4 weeks previously) had our EOI approved!!
The above isn't meant to alarm you or make you paranoid, from the few years I've been on the forum there's no one yet who hasn't made it through (unless my memory fails me!!) and very few (maybe one or two) who have had awkward immigration officers.
You'll be fine, just remember, you're on holiday so look excited!! I didn't stop yakking!! :laugh
Oh, and we brought our laptops on the plane with us, but nothing else in terms of personal effects unless it was "holiday gear" - ie. don't try and get through with the kitchen sink and your china cat collection..... ;)
And do stick to the rules once you're here and keep to your visa restrictions! *wagging finger* :laugh
Edited to add:
By the way, if there ARE any immigration officials reading this then I would be grateful if they could confirm the correctness of the advise I was given, i.e. you can come here on holiday and at the same time visit recruitment companies and talk to employers on a visitors visa, as long as you don't contravene the visa restrictions (i.e work on a visitors visa), overstay, etc

You can even do this in the USA on a tourist visa. In both cases all they care about is that you don't actually work and leave by the visa expiration date. However I agree it's also smart to courier any sensitive docs.

Thanks everyone, makes interesting reading. I don't like the idea of all my documents being sent ahead...what if they got lost?? slim chance of that happening but it would cause so many problems, we'll use DHL so can keep a track of things, not the normal post. So that's decided now.
I am going to take my laptop with me, but nothing else just one bag of clothes.
I'm sure that we would have been ok to take the stuff, but I trust myself to say the right thing!

Read a few reports on other sites that mention sometimes NZ airport customs and immigration read through these websites!!!
A word of caution - ENZ is becoming very popular with researchers, media and immigrants alike and ranks highly in web searches for NZ related topics, if you are worried about info here being found by authorities and reporters then don't post specific info and personal data and keep your posts anon.

Moorf's comment reminded me of a recent newspaper article that directly quoted folks' posts from the forum!! It took a lot out of context, if I recall, and made a bunch of us think...GRRRRrrrrr!!!! As much as this is a "public" forum, most of us never intend to be quoted (or misquoted) in the newspaper!!!

I would think that if you looked into it the immigration dept would expect people to come over looking for work. After all its so hard to get the points without a job offer and hard to get a job offer without meeting face to face. They have to be realistic about it. It is just a case of keeping within the law.
