Hi All

Are planning to rent before buying, so can decide best place to live, we have two dogs, is renting difficult due to this factor, alot of landlords do not like dogs here in the UK is it the same in NZ?

Any advise appreciated, also any good sites to go on to find rented accomodation.

Thanks for any help

Lee

Landlords can be pretty anti dogs. Its just your luck sometimes though.

Have a look on Trademe for rentals, and also try out holiday homes/bach for a start as they sometimes let furry friends stay too.

If you go through an agency, see if they will put a specific request to the landlord, with details of your pets to see if they would let you. Some agents will do this, others stick to the party line of "no dogs" and wont even bother trying to help!

Best bet is getting to speak to a landlord direct... plead your case, offer an extra weeks bond, and offer get the carpets steam cleaned when you leave.

Good luck

certainly dogs make it a lot harder to find rentals.

try http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-me-property/index.htm

In Welly the rentals were going so fast that nobody would bother to negotiate about our dog - who is an unbelievably small 3.6 kg. Agencies were just a No for most everyplace. We found our rental in the Wednesday Dominion Post by calling up private landlords who listed there. Found a guy who said the dog was fine. You might have better luck with the paper or TradeMe than with agencies.

Be sure to clarify the dog being indoors. Some people have outdoor only dogs here with kennels in the yard, so sometimes the landlord will ok a dog, but for outdoors only. Not an option for us.

Hi. If you look at this thread, I have listed several rental agents. On some of these sites they ask you about animals. www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=9378 you need to go to post 14. Also there are some private rentals on post 22
Hope this helps

Hi Nashlee -

We just rented a place in Wellington with our two dogs - it IS discouraging since most of the rental ads say no pets, but we followed the advice that people above have given you and got lucky. We got the newspaper early and started calling ads that didn't have one of the big rental agency numbers listed as contact.

Our landlord was reluctant about the dogs at first, but we described them (even had a picture) and he decided we were OK. I think it also helps to be prepared to rent right away - we had been homeowners and brought references, record of mortgage payments on time, etc. to show we were responsible. We also made the point that we had just spent a LOT of time and money to get the dogs to NZ and so weren't likely to just let them run loose and cause damage.

Good luck!

We took a rental that specified "No Pets" and when we met the landlord, we asked if we could have one dog. He had already met us and seen that we were relatively sensible people and he agreed one dog, who we got about 3 weeks later. All OK so far!
Just check what the landlord is willing to agree as everyone has mentioned so far.
Good luck!
