As promised, here is a few pictues I have taken of more day to day things in New Zealand. Not great shots as a) i'm no david bailey and b) I wanted to get to the beach.

Hope it gives an insight into how things are and look, but remember these are just taken around the East Auckland area of Pakuranga/Howick/Botany

Cool pics! Howick looks a lot like Henderson to me, or maybe most Auckland 'burbs are similar? Can't wait to get back to NZ!

How sad am I that the pictures that made me feel most homesick were ourside the dairy and the pie warmer...

Wonderful photos! I bet they will help a lot of immigrants feel just a little more grounded when they land.

Great everyday living photos - really useful - thanks :nice1

I think it looks fab and cannot wait to see for myself now!

Just a question - would most people say that the photos are typical of most suburb type areas in other parts of NZ or do things differ tremendously elsewhere? eg North/South Auckland/Wellingon

Great, really good seeing normal things in NZ rather than views etc :P
I notice the small shops etc have an excess of signs? Do they really need 3 signs on roof, windows plastered in signs and 2-3 A-Boards on street outside! lol

Funny thing, I live in the area, perhaps 5-10 mins drive away and I had to look twice at some of the pics and then realise where they are! It looks far more "american" in pictures than the reality does (that's the UK idea of "american"!), at least I think it does!
And yes, LeeBennett, there are signs galore here, often outside people's houses advertising their services whether they are lawyers, printers, hairdressers, financial advisors or anything else you can think of!
There's a sign outside a house on Te Irirangi Drive (main highway to south Auckland and the airport from here) saying "Elegant mirror for sale". It's been there ever since we arrived in November! Makes me want to see what is looks like, as 'Gold -frame oval mirror' or 'Silver framed mirror36" x 48" ' I could understand, but what does the 'elegant mirror' look like?!

Yeah Gil - I've seen that and feel like ading an 's' to the 'mirror'. At least it would make a little more sense. :laugh

Great pics! One of the dairy photos reminded me of those seaside shops that sell absolutely everything. Good, as Vicki said, to see the everyday stuff.

Cheers!

Gil that was my impression too, very american looking, specially the road signs and the junctions on motorways etc. Having done quite a bit of driving in the states, it was quite weird so be seeing the same kind of signs, but be driving on the "right" side of the road!

On the subject of signs, there has been a piano for sale at the end of our road for nearly two years (and thats to our knowledge, may have been for sale for longer.....) :)

Brilliant!! Thanks so much for these - at least we know what's what when we come over in March. Such a good idea to see everyday things :nice1

Well, it is nice to not only see "everyday" photos of NZ, but also a little glimps into your lives. Thanks for sharing.

We are currently, unfortunately, American and researching the option of moving to NZ in a few years (wife is finishing her CPA licensing). Seeing what life is really like there through your photos certainly helps.

As we are seeking to get away from the American lifestyle and culture, it was unfortunate that I saw a McDonalds and Subway in your photos. I suppose there is no getting away from Corporate America. The politics, economics, lifestyle, and culture here is going straight down hill (this is a whole different and long discussion).

Anyway, keep posting these great photos when you can!

Thank you,
Robert & Inna

It's really nice to see some everyday life photographs. I've found it quite hard to find "normal" photos of New Zealand and its cities where things arent aimed at tourists.

Following on the 'American' theme that has sprung up in this thread - I think that it has heavily borrowed from american culture. Is that because they were both 'growing up' at the same time?

What I mean is not just the road signs, malls and fast food places but the fishing, hunting, attitudes to drinking, spectator sport, housing and cars.

Does anyone else think this, particulary americans over here - and I suppose I should put this in a thread of it's own. ;)

Robert & Inna - please just be aware that the NZICA (NZ's accountancy institute) does not recognise CPA. There are no reciprocal agreements between NZ and the US regarding recognition of accountancy qualifications or work experience. It may be worth getting in touch with them sooner rather than later to find out the best way to proceed (eg if you register with them now they may recognise any work exp done from now on?)

Don't worry, it's not like it is here yet in NZ, with 8 Starbucks per mile. :roll We did a trip around the NI and only saw McDonalds, Burger King, and Starbucks in Auckland. I've heard there are more, but we never saw them. Hopefully NZ keeps a rein on the US chains and monopolies! :nice1 Also, if you are really homesick, at least you can walk into a McDonalds, taste the food, and remember at least one reason why you moved!

Despite the fact that we hardly ever went to McDonalds in the UK, we went twice in our first week here as it was across the road from the car dealership we bought from, although not been at all since and unlikely to in future. Must say it tasted far better than how I remember UK McDs!! They do stress it's local (ie NZ) produce...
