If it comes up we don't have enough points (without a job offer) to put in a EOI and be pulled from pool - would this plan work do you think?
1. sort all paperwork out beforehand.
2. Hubby contacts recruitment company for job and applies for work visa.
3. Hubby gets job and goes out to NZ without me and kids (and sends off his EOI).
4. I sort out house/pack etc and apply for visitors visa (9 months period) and students visa for kids (work visa period).
5. We join hubby after about 1 -2 months.
6. After work visa's 6 month period is up - we apply for residency (assuming EOI has come up trumps).
I think it sounds good on paper but not sure logistically. Any help would be appreciated!

We kicked a very similar idea around for a while (minus kids), but we finally decided on a new plan:
(we need J/O to do EOI)
1 Steve finishes degree while we sell house/pre-assessment (Jan-March)
2 send out CVs and get interest/interviews/job offer? (Feb-March)
3 police checks/medicals(late Feb&Mid-March respectively)
4 3wk visit for interviews in April (and visit Judy, Sean, and Lochlann!)
5 (get Job offer *fingers crossed* and visa, either while in NZ, or soon after
6 move house, do final paperwork, say goodbye
7 file EOI after Job Offer, either from states, or after NZ arrival
So we haven't finished ironing out details, but it's a similar plan to yours, and I think they will both work! Your Hubby might want a 1yr visa, though, as I'm pretty sure it entitles you to medical and you won't have to pay duty on shipped stuff( )
Good Luck!!!

1. sort all paperwork out beforehand.
2. Hubby contacts recruitment company for job and applies for work visa. As the first applicant for a visa - he must have a job offer first
3. Hubby gets job and goes out to NZ without me and kids (and sends off his EOI).
4. I sort out house/pack etc and apply for visitors visa (9 months period) and students visa for kids (work visa period). If you are from the UK you won't have to apply for a visitors visa, you will automatically get a 6 month visa on arrival. Once OH has a work permit you will be able to apply for an open work permit and student permits for the kids, this can be done in NZ. If you go to NZIS directly they will probably issue them the same day. (For a cost of course)
5. We join hubby after about 1 -2 months.
6. After work visa's 6 month period is up - we apply for residency (assuming EOI has come up trumps). Don't wait till after your work permits run out to apply, you will legally no longer be able to stay in NZ. I don't know what the minimum permit period is, but if you got one for a year it will give you time to decide if you want to stay.
I think it sounds good on paper but not sure logistically. Any help would be appreciated!
We did a similar thing to this three years ago, hope my little bit of imput helps

Re 'applying for residency when 6 month period is up' - I meant to say, I think you can't actually apply for residency until 6 months into your work visa (if that makes sense!) - please put me right if I'm wrong but I think there was a change back in December, which reduced it to 6 months from 2 years.
Brain strain! :)

Im not sure about that one Twig... We applied for PR in Dec 2005, with just under a year left on our two year work permit's. But they were straight forward permits (and I know the rules have changed since we got them) and not Work to Residency permit's or anything like that, I think that may be what you are referering too.

here you are talking about a "skilled migrant work to residence" visa - these are gven by NZIS if they are not completely sure of your ability to find a job. you get a work to residence visa then have 6 months in which to find a job (reduced from 2 years sometime last year). once you've been in that job three months you are then granted residence.
on a normal work visa - ie you get a job then apply for a work visa you are allowed to apply for PR straightaway.

Thanks for that, that makes a lot more sense!
