Do kiwis have good beer? What brands are best? What imports do kiwis get? Do kiwis love beer as much as rugby?

Back in the 80s, my dad bought generic beer from the local supermarket chain. It came in a white can with "Beer" in black letters and you need to puncture it to drink it. I'm going to go out on a limb and classify it as bad beer.

Suppose you could call all those drinks in flashy looking cans with Germanic sounding names and having the same strength and taste as gnats pee as bad beer :laugh

Yes. Depends on your taste, hubby like Montieths Celtic Ale, Steinlager and will drink anything I buy Tui, Lion Red etc :D Seen Stella, Amstel, Tuborg, Becks, Carlsberg, Guiness, Oranjieboom, Fosters (enough?). Yes!
Gil
Hope that answers your question rather than debating the merits of respective beers like the men! :nice1:p

Yes Steve and its called Lion Red:yes Like drinking water as it comes in at 4%. Must admit i stay away from the kiwi brew apatfrom Monteiths and stay with what i know like Stella, Becks,Grolsch as you can get all the euro beers here. Slightly more exspensive, but at least i am enjoying it.:cheers

Loads of good NZ beers & you can buy many beers from around the world in the supermarkets & bottle shops.
My faves are Monteiths (pretty much all of them) but Summer Ale, Radler (lime flavour) and Winter Ale.
Mac's (the new summer one which is organic - yum!)
Speights, Tui and Steinlager, am also partial to a Loaded Hog's brewery wheat beer.
There's loads of boutique beers as well which are very nice... too many good NZ beers to try to worry about finding beers that you used to drink from home... although most pubs tend to serve Stella & you can find all the usual bottled beers as well.

Oh yes, we're Monteiths fans too - Radler and Summer for me and Black and Celtic for Woz!
The Twisted Ankle at the Twisted Hop is nice too :D, it's my Tanglefoot substitute here!

There's nothing wrong with the more common NZ beers like Tui and Speights Gold either. The only beer I miss from the US is Widmer Hefeweizen.
Anyone who was in NZ in the 70's knows how much things have improved since then when there were no imports and only 3 brands, usually served in glass pitchers.

Got to try the Monteiths Radler now, I have tried a fair few of the others that they do.
Is it me, or does Macs not seem quite as nice as Monteiths?
Speights gold is a nice drink on a hot day too.
If you like South american lagers (Sol/Corona) try Cantina, its from El Salvador, YUM, I get it in foodtown.
If you are in Auckland, you have to try this place http://www.shakespearehotel.co.nz/ does lovely bar food too.

Moorf, you'll have to fill me in on this ginger beer thing - I think my OH might really like it. (He loves hard cider, he loves straight ginger beer... I think alchololic ginger beer might just be worth a try!)
As for beer... I've just polished off a few bottles of Raddler tonight. I accidently order it at Hells pizza this week and LOVED it!

Kim, don't know what's wrong with 4% - better than most beers in the pubs!
As for Stella - WHOA - now that's fightin' beer.
And isn't the point of emigration about getting away from your usual habits and getting into the local culture/stuff? Got to be loads of decent NZ beers to try out, just like Sarah says??

Go with your first point Steve ;) as for the fightin' beer, maybe back home but not here as folks just seem to stick with the local brew as the imports are a tad more exspensive. At least that what i have found with the lads at footie, along with bod's from work, and E's work colleagues.

Not much to report I'm afraid - the brand I love is called Ginger Tom and the only place I'm aware of that sells it in Chch is Dux de Lux. I found a wee review site on the ginger beer: http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/dux-de-lux-ginger-tom/15958/
I managed to find some Schweppes Alcoholic Ginger Beer (I think it was in New World - not sure....) but it wasn't as nice as the Dux brew!
Let me know if any of you find more - it's usually by the bottled 6 packs in the supermarket / bottle store.
On no account add a splash of whisky - it's too nice :laugh

If you're a ginger beer lover, like me, then you should try the Buderim (sp?) mixers and cordials - the mixer is great if you have a soda stream! Yummmm...

It's SI only - I found a weird, but handy map of the Progressive supermarket group (Foodtown, Woolies, Countdown etc) http://www.freshchoice.co.nz/locations/index.asp
