I'll ask my sister for you - she lives in Dunedin and has a holiday home in Naesby so they possibly drive through Middlemarch on the way up (but Palmerston road might be quicker...)

I've not been through that way for about 15 years - I only remember it was a blink-or-miss kind of place

Middlemarch is the start of the Rail Trail, and so tends to get a few tourists these days. Town is pretty non-descript, main road + one whole block - there is a nice Kissing Gate cafe.

Here's a link (http://www.otagorailtrail.co.nz/index.php?option=com_zoom&Itemid=58&catid=12)

middlemarch is 1hr from Dunedin, it has a big big hill one road 30 odd houses and thats it. cheap property though.

You can leave from there and cycle the central rail trail that used to run from Middlemarch to somewhere near Queentsown, the rails have all gone but its a lovely cycle up through middle earth.

there is/was a "dating festival" (for want of a better word..) in middlemarch!!started because there were more males than females living in the town (nothing mustve changed since the singles ball is still going :) ) they ship girls in on a historic railway for all the farmers in the area ;)

not the info you were after but still :)

spent a lot of time in central otago/otago in general as a kid and its a lovely area, very pretty.
