Is it necessary to book ahead on the ferry from Wellington to Picton in mid March, for 5 foot passengers? I'm kind of assuming it won't be necessary but am I right?

Thanks,
Carey

Carey

I've just looked and they are running extra sailings on some days because this holiday period is so heavily booked.

That doesn't apply to March but all the cheaper fares are going quickly and some sailings are sold out already. :uhoh You could end up paying $350 for 5 people instead of $225.

If you don't mind sailing at 6 am you should be ok, but I'm a worry guts and I'd book. :D

Would recommend it - if only to take advantage of cheaper fares which are unlikely to be available on the day.

Some sailings do get fully booked & certainly in summer months I'd always book ahead - but like Smiler I'm also a 'worry guts'!!

Is the sailing across 3 hours? Looks a lovely crossing...

Very moving in middle of crossing, after quiet first hour through malborough sounds..nothing like UK's crossing...try remember what is like 20 years ago before stabilizer in the boat. Our boat was rough on smooth, clear day.

Yes it's 3 hours, Steve. About 1 hour is spent in the Sounds going into Picton. That's gorgeous.

They can be the most enjoyable or horrid hours though, because it's a nice crossing on a fine summers day, not on a wild weather day though. :uhoh

I once did the crossing as a foot passenger. It was April and we just turned up - didn't need to book.
