Hi folks, need some help on this one. These good folks have posted this on my housing information thread and I am not in a position at the moment to properly answer it.I am not sure whether people regularly check this thread and I was a bit concerned that the right people would not read it If someone in the know could answer it on the housing info thread then It should ensure they get an answer. If that doesn't confuse you nothing will

Hi,

Although rental costs are advertsied as a weekly sum, I think most landlords give you the option of paying weekly, fortnightly or monthly. I know ours did. We have a regular payment set up on our bank account to our landlord. I guess you could pay cash, but that wouldn't be very conveniant.

This is an excerpt from the Living in New Zealand book you get with your ITA:
Rent is usually paid fortnightly in advance, but it is possible to make monthly payments if your landlord agrees.
Hope that helps,
Ana

Most rentals will allow you to pay however you like, whether that be weekly, fortnightly or monthly. Many people pay in line with their wage payments - I've changed mine when going from being paid fortnightly to monthly.

We pay fortnightly, but could have paid weekly. Monthly was not mentioned by the agents or the landlord.
Our contract sepcified no pets, but we asked the landlord if we could have 1 dog before we signed, and he agreed and it is written into our contract. (so we went to the SPCA and got Olive, a different thread!)
We pay with a direct debit sort of thing.

I think (not 100% sure) that two weeks in advance is the maximum that landlords are allowed by law to charge. So two weeks is normal, but presumably if you both agree to monthly that'd be fine, and weekly clearly happens too.

We pay by AP (automatic payment straight to the landlords account) - like a direct debit. All very easy.

Our landlord said to just set up direct deposit in time with our paychecks. So for us that is fortnightly. If you really have a hard time with remembering anything more frequently than monthly, I've never heard of a landlord having a problem with you paying in advance. Once you are 2 weeks ahead on rent, you should be able to pay the next months worth at a time... granted it better to hold your money as long as you can to make interest on it etc, but there have been times in our lives where we were traveling so much that we ended up paying our student loans/rent a month ahead so it didnt' matter if we were a week late, it was actually 3 weeks early. This was quite handy one season where the 1st kept falling on weekends and I always forgot to send the check in on the 25 or 26 of the month before. Back when all bills were paid by check with stamps and the lot - not so here it looks like.

Hi our landlady wanted 2 weeks in advance but we preffered 3as that was our period of notice and she was fine with that .Actually were about to give her notice cos we just put an offer in on a house and had it accepted so just waiting for it to finalise before we tell her. NO MORE RENT FOR US!!!

Hi,
When we rented we paid weekly by automatic payment and now we are a bit of landlords ourselves and organised same with our tenants. Easy as that - don't have to think about it as a tenant and I never have to be worried about whether the money will get in my bank account.
I think weekly and fortnightly payments are most common here.

Cheers,
Anita
