Hi Sharon

I would recommend something that has cooking and washing machine facilities and in town. Saves on Taxis and you can eat in and do your own laundry. Plus rented is short on the ground at the moment.

Quest has various hotels not sure if that is within your budget.

but this site gives price guide for all hotels in downtown Wellington

Good luck

When my family visited (two adults, an eight year old and a 14 yr old) they stayed at and were impressed by Victoria Court Motel. http://www.victoriacourt.co.nz/

The ability to do your own cooking should help keep prices down.

We stayed at the Abel Tasman, and with the special they were running, it was only a few bucks more then the backpackers! :) It was nice, and our corner room had an awesome view. There was a kitchenette in our room (the fridge didn't work but he warned us and we didn't need it) and the staff were friendly.

Wellington YHA is right downtown and one of the best in the world. Worth considering...

Yes YHA is a perfect place to stay - we tried that as well a year ago, but you can only stay there for a very limited time - I think 5 days.
And I do not know whether you can go there with kids?
Worth checking first.

Cheers,
Anita

Another hostel that has family style rooms is Wellywood, which is also centrally located.

If you would like to stay at a B&B you could try "Frinton by the Sea" (Ph: 04-5627540). Its runned by Doug & Wendy in Eastbourne and located at the top of Rona Street overlooking Wellington city. However, if you would like a self-contained flat (which is fully furnished) there is one in Ngaio ... runned by Jennifer Timmings (Ph: 04-4795325).

We stayed at Wildlife House (http://www.wildlifehouse.co.nz/) backpackers which was cheap. Despite its name it was laid back with a friendly staff and a big communal kitchen and several refrigerators upstairs. Also has 24 hour internet access for free - 5 terminals. (Occassionally all taken, but not in the early morning.) You can get a private family room. Right by Courtney Central, and in walking distance to the New World grocery. We liked it - when we were lost we could look up and find it - it's painted with zebra stripes!

May not be what you're after at all with a child, but they do allow kids as long as anyone under 18 is always accompanied by an adult throughout their stay.

We stayed at Capital View Motor Inn (http://www.capitalview.co.nz/) . It is centrally located and has fully equiped kitchenette.
