...we are hoping to come over in late August or early Sept., depending on what happens with ITA--or with plan B if ITA allocation and approval takes longer than that (I'm trying to be confident that I will get the ITA in on time and we will get approved...fingers crossed!!!!)--

So, with Aug/Sept in mind, when should we actively start seeking estimates from shippers/container companies? I realize we'll have to set a date, which we will as time gets closer, but how close?

We are in USA (WV).

What have some of you done regarding this?

much thanks,
Christine

Don't know about in W. Virginia Christine, but give as much time as possible to get your quote. Then you have to give them at least 2 weeks notice before moving, but the more notice the better.

Good luck with your move.

Hi Christine

I'm really just confirming Steve's post....we were told that 2 weeks notice was enough time to book our shipping. I was amazed, I thought they would need much more notice, but apparently not. We've had quite a few quotes, and started getting these in September (moving hopefully at start of March). Also some companies came back to our house twice, before we made a decision who to go with.

Sorry that I can't provide help from the US perspective though (we're in Liverpool),

I started shopping around last summer, and they were a little reluctant as we didn't have a sound move date. I guess their prices fluctuate with time of year, gas prices, etc. We haven't had anyone out yet, though. Our friends Sean and Judy used Mayflower and affiliates and recommend them. (They had a partial load)
I used this site to get multiple quotes. We will probably try for more familiar names in the end.
