I was watching Rough Guide to New Zealand yesterday on Sky Travel. They visited a Used House Lot where a young couple bought a used house for $5000 dollars. Then had it loaded up and transported to their section.

Does this still happen - or did the practice stop years ago.

Or have I been caught out by a late April foolsday joke.

Ooops have got to stop talking to myself in public.

Believe me, its still going on and is quite popular by all accounts.
I grew up in what the real estate people now call a "Colonial Villa"; an old 100 year weatherboard house on Ruahine St, Palmerston North.
After my parents retired they sold the house, and it has now been moved 20 miles away to a site in the country side just to the north of Fielding.

I also intend to research this idea upon our arrival.

Yes indeedy, however, I did hear of one instance where a husband had moved the family home as a suprise to the wife to a beautiful location, but the crane dropped the house or something slipped and the house was dropped and ruined on the new site. :wah

How awful would that be?!

Sarah ... I shouldn't laugh but that would be funny.

Err Honey ... they've just dropped the house off.....

Anyway - re PB's posting above about his olds house that was moved from Palmerston North. Here's a picture of it in it's new location.

Here is a house movers site in Whangarei, http://www.yellow.co.nz/site/whangareihousemovers/Buildings%204%20Sale.html
He has one nice one there, they will also lift your house so that you can build a whole extra floor underneath, useful in these days with small sections.
Aparently you have to be careful with these house movers, some of them are cowboys, hence someones house getting dropped !!!

Amazing innit!
Its been on that site for about 10-15 years now. They have re-painted it since we lived in it. It was once white, with a green roof.
The 2 (of 3) visible windows to the left is/was the master bedroom and running down the back of the house is two more bedrooms. The centre left window with the seat under it was my sisters bedroom and the next window to the right of that with the other seat under it, was Mums sewing room. The 2 (of 3) visible windows to the right is the lounge and further to the right is the kitchen/living room. Straight back to the rear of the house is a massive bathroom and laundry area.

Believe me, if this ever comes up for sale again in my lifetime, y'all know where to find us! :hopeso

You're damn tootin' baby !!!!! I've even decided to drop a letter through their door when we arrive asking them if they will consider selling it to us.

Well, you never know do you. I reckon it would be really good to end up living in the house that you grew up in :nice1

oh my God. It's beautiful. I really, really, really do NOT want to end up in a 'box' when houses like that exist. I'll wait.

There's a used house lot not too far from my parent's house in Auckland. They move the houses (usually cut into two halves) on large trucks at night - and they often come down my parents street - you can hear all the shouting and engine grinding as they try to get round the bend just outside my parents house!! An amazing sight to see!!

I love your old house PB. An old colonial would be my dream house. Especially if it had verandas fully enclosing the house - wow!! *sigh* not likely in this lifetime, methinks!!

Thanks to you all for replying and thanks Diny for the pic of the house. It looks amazing. Just what we would like when we get there. :hopeso

Thanks Gran for the link.

We were just amazed to see this couple wander around this site with lots of houses, chose one then have it lifted by crane and moved to their site. Brilliant idea, I do not know how many times I have had to move house to a new area and did not leave my house behind.

One thought that we had is, we want to build our own house. Is it possible to buy an old one and keep it on the site until the new one is built then sell the old one on again. But if we found a brilliant one like your Mum and Dads PB, we would not have to build our own.

I've seen it, just outside Feilding on the Halcombe road. It's in a lovely setting and looks very grand as in the photo.

Just found the following link for a firm in Christchurch where you can buy a second hand house, or get them to build you one in their yard then transport it to your site.

http://laing.co.nz/

Roll on next year, I am dying to go and have a look at their yard. :yes

But on later reading of their website their houses seem to be made out of chipboard not real wood so maybe not a good idea.
